LT1/T56 RX7 quarter mile results
i finally got around to hitting up the local drag strip for a test and tune night in the LT1 powered RX7. this was the first time ever for me, i had a lot of fun. the motor is a '94 and close to stock besides air intake and exhaust... pretty much required for the swap. i was running some crappy 245/50/16's on the rears. the car weighed in at 2875 distributed 52/48 and i weigh about 175. here is my best run of the night:
60 ft - 2.01
330 ft - 5.61
1/8 ET - 8.57
1/8 MPH - 82.59
1/4 ET - 13.24
1/4 MPH - 106.42
the 2.01 60' time is going to need some work... i think i can chip off an easy 0.2-0.3 with a nice set of tires and be a solid 12 second car. let me know what you guys think of these numbers.
the 5th run of the day i wasted my clutch on the dreaded 2-3 shift, i barely made it back home... i attached a picture of the carnage for your enjoyment .
OUCH!
glad that piece stopped in the bellhousing rather than my nuts
who's that goofy bastard?
some dyno #'s, this was last yearish... nothing has really changed since then...

welp looks like its time for some slick, a spec stage 3, and some gears. youll be an easy 12 second car with slicks, and gears and that clutch will take a beating too. but if i were you i would consider a cam, rockers, springs and stuff like that. not necessarily saying go all out and get a bunch of head work done but just a mild cam to wake that car up and get it running some low 12s.

With the low cost of LT1's down at junkyards now it's amazing there aren't more of these swaps out there....
Get a new clutch some good drag radials and a small shot of juice (100-150 shot) and that thing will be an absolute monster..... hell i was running 11.40's with the stock LT1 (upper and lower end BONE STOCK) and that was at 3600lbs..... that thing would probably go 10's on a 150 shot....
Either way, sweet swap..... sorry to hear about the clutch... surprised the stock motor did it in like that.... When they break up like that they are generally VERY old and beat up.... that thing looks like it's been sitting in the hot sun as dry and flaked up as it looked...

guys thanks for the replys! i have one year left at school before i graduate with a mechanical engineering degree... once that happens, my plans will be to buy a really nice RX-7 shell (unlike that piece of crap pictured above) and putting in a nicely built LT1. i am thinking llyod elliot head cam (LE2?) with a 150 shot of nitrous would do the trick. the car will obviously have the turbo rearend (holds 500 ft/lbs) and some nice slicks for the track.... i would be shooting for the 11's. i'm pretty happy with the 4.10 rearend gears, but an upgraded clutch will be a must!
coming back from dream world, the current plans for THIS car is replacing the clutch and attempting to sell it to fund school and start the new project. i've allready purchased an autozone clutch which will come with a lifetime warrenty. for me doing the motor swap is 90% of the fun... having a fun car is just the cherry on top.
there is actually a story behind the rims... they actually mean a lot to me. i drove that car from michigan to mississippi this past memorial day for the first ever major V8 RX7 meet. when i arrived the poor camber on my rear wheels caused the tires to wear down to the cords. some of the guys at the meet noticed this, and when i came back from a ride with the host of the meet i found my car with 4 brand new rims and tires that were installed at no charge. probably one of the coolest things that has happened to me.
the paint... it may be spray paint... but it looks a heck of a lot better than what it used to be! (plus primer makes cars FTL! )
