LS1 vs. LT1
#42
I know I have been one of the lucky ones, My first Opti took me to 83,000 miles (not bad). Let me ask this how much does it cost to replace the Coil packs on an LS1 to the MSD coil packs. I think they were $90.00 ea. I run with well modded LS1's. I also got a friend who took his LS1 blocked out, pissed on it and got himself an 6.0 iron block for his 408

i am not going to say it cant be true, nor will i call you a liar cause i just dont know!however if your car did put those numbers down STOCK thats just badass more than a freak to me.
big boys at gm said the Lt1 is 300 at the crank and the Ls1 is 350 at the crank and we all know, NO two engines make the same power even if they are duplicated by the same componets.
you definately have a quick ride!

My ancient iron block might be 1/2 second slower all things being equal but I sure dont have appearance issues like this:
I am sick of people ragging on the LT1 and implying its gay. The LT1 paved the road for the LS1 which again with all things being equal is the superior motor. You can even say the the 03+ Cobra will spank the LS1 any day as well so it cant be the motor of the gods.
I do know this, if god created the LS1 in his image the way people say all the time then he must have modeled the body style after a clown faced wide mouth catfish. At-a-boy to GM engineering for missing the boat here, but it sure is fast.

ive driven both,i own a 97 Z and my old man has an 02 formula. i like em both.
imo the only thing better about the LS1 is that bolt on for bolt on it will be slightly faster as others said previously
my bolt on Z (mods in sig) gets walked by LS1 with similar mods and and barely pull stock LS1's

of course the LS1 is always going to win stock for stock or with equal mods i would hope GM didnt make a new engine that was inferior to the previous one...i paid 5,500 for my 50K mile fully optioned LT1 mint condition, a similiar LS1 would have ran me ATLEAST 10k around where i am from....
so you could take that 4500 and do a LE stage 1 or 2 H/C package, and maybe a couple boltons, assuming the good ol opti isnt on the way out
or you could get the LS1 and have a stronger base to start with...
if money is no object then the choice is easy... LS7

And if you buy the budget brands you can get LS1 mods reasonably priced. For example, Pacesetter coated LT headers and ORY are only $530. TCI 3500-4000 stalls are in the $500-$600 range. Lids and cutouts=cheap. PRC and Patriot make budget heads in the 900-1200 range. Hell I can get a 402 or even 408 CI Iron short block for around $3,500 now. And LT1 guys love to talk about the iron as a pro rather then a con
To the thread starter,
8K worth of mods in each could probably net similair results if the money is spent wisely. It's when you are spending less then 3K or willing to spend 25k+ that the LS1 really shows a big advantage.
