Default Synthetic on a high mileage car?

106,xxx on the clock. Is synthetic motor oil a good or bad idea?

I have 141K on the clock and I run full synthetic. I have had no problems with it.

When did you switch though?

I would not switch on anything over 100k... probally even over 60k I wouldnt switch. Synthetic will clean out oil deposits, which will cause leaks and can possibly clog up the oil system.

I think 96caprice switch his engine to synthetic, at around 70k. All it took was a few extra oil filters, and it was good to go, as far as I remember he said. I really don't see the issue with switching, ever heard of autorx? it works on the same principle, it's not like adding a solvent to quickly break the deposits up. It just slowly takes it to the oil filter. I guess it could clog the system, but I didn't have any issues with a 160k engine(that was sludged pretty bad), when I put synthtic blend in it(had it around), and did an autorx. the filter filled kinda fast, but other than that, I loved the power gain I got.

I know ALOT of people who have had major issues, especially in the early-mid 90s. People would buy cars from the US and bring them here (high mileage engines), and because they havent sold conventional oil in ages here people would swap to a synthetic... I had a hard time getting some conventional for the TA, got the last few quarts of Castrol GTX at a friends place.
