Question on OIL and Breaking in Motor
Started the motor up about 5 days ago. Just put penzoil 10w-30 to break it in. Changed the oil after start up. Put more pen 10w-30.
question is I dyno tune 3 days from now. I have put 5 miles on the car.
When can I put Synthetic? Do I just dyno on the penzoil 10w-30?
Do I have to drive a certain amount of miles to break in everything?

Do not put synthetic in for at least 500 miles.....possibly more. I would wait till about 2000 miles myself.
Dyno with the 10w30 or put in 5w30.

You'll get a lot of wear metals right off the bat. After you have a little run time on it, I would drive a varied RPM range for the first few thousand miles. I would change the oil semi-often for a bit. When I broke my motor in, the shop put non detergent oil in it and said drive it 100 miles and change it to a detergent oil. Then I think they said change it at 2000 if I remember right. Just don't leave the first round of oil in there for 5000 miles! My Jetta manual says change it at 5K, 10K, and then 20K. I changed it at 15K too just to be safe. This is with VW's special spec oil. If it were me, I would go about 500 miles on conventional, then change it and go 500-2000. Then go 2000-5000 and then start with synthetics at the 5000 mark. Then go 5000-10000 then 10000-20000. This is my combined experience with my motor and my new Jetta.

bit off topic, but figured you should look this over.

Yeah as that article says go beat on it. I usually do a warm up and check over of the motor on a dyno, then do some 1/2 throttle, 3/4 throttle and then a few full throttle runs to 4500-5000rpm to seat the rings. Then it's time to drain the oil and change the filter and go with the good stuff. IF you do things right the rings will be seated in by then, on a roller cam motor that's all you need to care about anyways.
In the end whoever built your motor should tell you how to break it in.

I took mine to the dyno with 50 miles on it (tuning). The tuner did some 1/4 throttle, 1/2 throttle, 3/4 throttle for about 2 hrs. Then he would take it to 6500. Did some hard city driving for about 600 miles, and put another 500 miles on the highway.
