Default MSD Pro-Billet users come in

I'm having a hell of a time with this thing. My car was built in 07/94. So I bought the part #8381. Turns out it didn't fit. The spot for the optispark has a spine/gear sticking out(male end), and the msd opti-spark has the same exact thing. Male+male=wrong. After talking with MSD, they said GM is notorious for swaping parts for other years. They told me that if #8381 doesn't work, then I must need #83811. Finally got #83811 and still doesn't work. Different shape but still a male end. It needs to be female! The stocker msd has a female end. Has anyone else encountered this problem? Who else has this distributor?

i have it....you can pull the male spine/gear out...it should be just a double ended male...then you can use the male on the MSD

you can... but you need the new front timing cover and cam and timing chain... just go with the one that fits your car... the 92-94... as long as you have done that to the car... then yes you can run that year opti...

Hey if you order the MSD opti and you are running the 92-94 style, well you get the vent system, so with the new MSD opti there is no reason to convert to 95+ to get the vented stuff.

Ralls, I'm going to suggest picking up a Haynes or a Chiltons, if you had one of those you would know the drive for the opti comes out of the cam. If you already have one of these well I'm sorry if I sound like a *******.
I like that feature of the MSD opti that the drive is intergrated into it, I almost lost the dowel when I did my head gasket work. A little piece that will ruin your day.

You have got to be kidding me. The male end on the cam can simply come off??? The star-lookin gear will come out, making it a female hole, then the male msd opti will fit. That right?

What about if I pull the gear off the msd opti instead. Would it come off? Well now I have the 95-97, which has the circles instead of the gear. I'm fucked if I can't use the 95-97 on my 94.

Would you happen to know if your 94 had the gear sticking out of the cam? Or you didn't have to mess with it cause only cap? Also, what month was your car made in 94?

I just called up my friend/mechanic who did this for me and told him what you guys said. He didn't see any bolts or anything holding in the gear on the cam. He said there could of been a c-clamp somewhere, or stuck in good. Basically I'm asking if the is anything holding the gear in, or you just simply pull it out..
Sorry about the 3 posts, I'm anxious for advice right now.

msd doesn't know what the **** their talking about either. they didn't mention anything about this on the phone. they even said the main difference between 8381 and 83811 is 83811 is female. Idiots. the reason i'm "not getting this," is because i had to pay someone to pull off my opti and then put it right back. plus switching part numbers after playing $95 for restocking & shipping. I'm wanting to be 100% positive on this.

I got it through speed unlimited. They were about $50 cheaper at the time. Luckly they are willing to work with me even though I'm sending it back AGAIN and getting the one I orginally had. I was 30 days too many over the return policy the first time, but they still did it. Anyhow, he's just charging shipping fee (no restocking fee) this time. I'll post up if this doesn't work. Thanks for everything
