Default Changing out an Opti(scratch, fuel pump) now another problem

Well it's that dreaded time in my cars life to change out the stock opti. It's a 97 so of course its the vented crap. I'm going to get the Advance auto parts replacement just becaue of the life time warranty and the stories I've heard from GM's direct replacement. Are there any links on a step by step for changing this out? Any opinions, tips, ect. College kid going to be doing this most likely with a friend so any input will be helpful and greatly appreciated!
Thanks in advance guys.

My best advice is make sure the car runs and runs good before you put the water pump back on and re fill it with coolent, also i recomend getting a new vacuum harness for the opti to ensure a long life out of the new one. And take the throttle body screw out and go to the hardware store and get nuts that go on the screw. Dubble nut the screw and then you can use a regular socket to pull off the opti cap if need be. I personaly am terrible at lining the opti up right without the cap off. any question just ask

Are there any things I should look for to make sure the its the opti that is not letting my car start? My car has been misfiring lately and sputtering, could it be the fuel filter or something else besides the opti? because when I am trying to start it I don't really smell any gas or anything.

car won't start, car starts to misfire, sputter on starting. It could either be the opti or fuel system for either of those, but most likely the opti. Those are all tell tale signs. Plus opti starts to go out around 100k miles and mine has 104

You check your coil? Mine did that...and i replaced the coil and all was good. You can usually blame it on the opti and higher RPM's the lower the RPM's, usually start up idling, it's not the optis fault...just a suggestion, get the spark test, and perhaps change the coil with an MSD blaster coil and see how that workd.

You're not lyin. I got it in with the Cam Pin at 9:00 position, but the OPTI was a pain to slip on. It had to be moved just right. That was with the Engine in the car. Took about an hour and a half.

well i haven't done any work on it yet as I am trying to pinpoint the exact problem, but someone told me to check and see if the car is getting any fuel or pressure, and I'm not hearing the fuel pump turn on when I turn the key to the "on" posistion i can't hear it hum or anything. anyone got any tricks to figure out if this is the problem?

Have someone stand in the back and listen for it to wine when you turn the key on. If no wine, there you go...

Unplug it from the front of the Coil and the top of the OPTI right behind the Water Pump. Takes like 5 sec..

You can put a quick manual guage on the shrader valve to see if you're getting fuel pressure to the fuel rails.

Obviously the quickest and easiest is to hear the fuel pump prime before you start the car.

back of the fuel rails, to the left of the FPR (fuel pressure regulator) little help for your lt1 vocab. lol

It should have a black plastic screw on cap over it. You'll need to remove the needle inside of it then put the test gauge on it. Imagine your tire air fill valve, thats similar to this.
