SAE 10W30 and Synthetic 10W30 are exactly the same weight, dexterity, etc... and must pass all the same tests. One is not "thicker", or "thinner" then the other.
There are chemical properties in the synthetic that makes it last longer and provide more slippage/lubrication... thats the difference.

I used to think there was more of a difference until Chip Foose proved me wrong.

burn you are wrong. all 30 weight oils are not the same. by being a 30 weight they fall in a range of similiar 30 weight oils that have the same viscosity @100c. I thought we went over this before...

Given that the normal is around 10.5 cst @ 100C. The old forumula M1 5 and 10w 30 weights were in the low 10cst @100c. Just recently with their new formular they are now in the low 11s. That German Made Castrol I mentioned is 12.1 cst @ 100c. Clearly why there is a range and you can call the same weight oils "thick" and thin" What's even more neat is the fact that GC is shear stable and will not loose viscosity over time such as M1 will..

I can't imagine running 0w30. Starts as 30, and when warm is 0w.... I'd fear leaks...
That's now how oil ratings work sir..

At cold temps, the 0w weight correlates to cold cranking viscosity.
That means GC will still flow at cold temps. (Which is a good thing!)

Im with you on this...to a point. Maybe im totally **** out of luck wrong.
and as far as differences they do have a couple, due to newer technology and advancements.
With that said, 10W30 is in the same class as 10W30 Synthetic.
I understand that they might perform differently, and I understand how weather effects oil

I watched an entire show on this where they compared Mobil 1 to Valvoline, same weight, just Synthetic verses SAE, and Synthetic outperformed the SAE, but the characteristics where very similar.
Very similar.

Lubrication. Weight.
The Synthetic Lasts longer, but its "thinner" chemicals and ingredients are the cause for that.

yeah IM not disagreeing with you on that part. a dino 10w30 is in the same 30weight range as a synthetic 10w30..

OK well now I know about 0w-30

If Synthetic was the same as conventional, they wouldn't have the recommendation to not use it on a higher mile motor. It's quite common knowledge I thought, not to do that. You get leaks because the synthetic has smaller mollecules to get between and lubricate better, but in higher mile instances, gets through the old seals and causes the leaks.

Feel free to correct that as well, but that was my understanding.

we're not talking about them chemically being the same oil, we're talking about the fact that whether you have a convential or synthetic 30 weight oil, they are in the same weight range. IE because it's a synthetic doesnt mean it's going to be thinner or thicker than the convential and vice versa. the 30 weight is a range like I indicated.

Synthetic doesnt cause leaks it has the tendency to worsen leaks that are already there. just FYI 165,000 miles Been running syntheic for over 25k and semi synthetic for 15k

I'm using Royal Purple 10w-30. Dosen't seem to be leaking out even though my pan gasket is questionable. 146k miles.
