Default is it possible for the starter to just come off the flywheel?

My starter sounds as if it is turning. But the engine is not cranking over. WTF Plus i was driving and my car acted fine. Then all of the sudden it missed out real bad then just died.

the bolts can back out and the starter might not catch the flywheel, but you should know if this is the problem as it would cause lots of noise... did it die like stated above and then the this problem start?

Yes, first it died. Then i tried to start again and there was a real low pitched griding noise, but it was still cranking. Then it acted like the battery was completely dead, it made that ticking noise. I waited about 5 hours. Tried to start it again and thats when it started acting like it had came off the flywheel. All i can here now is a noise like the starter is freely spining a million miles an hour.

I wonder if the bolts backed out enough to strip a few teeth? I say get a breaker bar turn the crank a bit and try to crank it over again.

lol It's the solenoid (Sil-eh-noid). The starter motor is fine, but the solenoid isn't kicking out the bendix. You just need to get a new starter. Or hit it with a hammer while someone cranks it over. Might get 5-25 more starts out of it before it's permanently kaput lol

yea sounds like the solenoid to me too. Sometimes the bendix can go bad too, causing it not to rotate with the shaft coming off the starter motor.
Could be either of those, I would pull it off as soon as you can get to it

Try popping the key; turning the starter over very quick and rapid (multiple times in a row). I've had luck with it engaging using this technique. Either the solenoid is bad or you broke teeth off of the flywheel. I've never had/heard of starter bolts backing out, unless you just didn't tighten them the last time you had the starter off.

My Guess would be a BUSTED HOUSING. Happened to be a few years back, and it. But it is just a guess.
