Default Kinda need some direction...

I have seen a lot of really fast LT1's in here, and I am in the persuit to have the same thing for myself so Im looking for opinions.

For those of you whom have a more completed projects, where would you start if your ultimate goal was to have in the neighborhood of 400-425hp? What would you have done differently?

Weekend Racer or just a wicked-fun daily driver? What kind of budget?

I'm no expert but, I wish I had the money for a low-medium boost supercharger setup and that would probably put me at or close to the 400RWHP mark I think.

A mild streetable cam and some spray will easily put you at that mark.

I have not dynoed my car yet, but on spray I should be around 420-430 rwhp. Last time I was running at the track I managed a 12.06 @ 117 with a 1.8 60'.

It all depends on the duties of your car. You can set up a nasty heads/cam package from a reputable porter and make close to 400 on motor alone, but you're going to sacrifice some daily driveability.

Well I would like to keep it all motor and off the spray, lookingfor a wicked-fun daily driver. As long as I can sqeeze an average of 15-17mpg would be nice. As long as the cam won't make it stall everytime it settles back to idle then I'm good with that

Is it an auto or manual? will it be used for drag or street racing? and how much money you're willing to dump?

I dont know from experience but, I like the idea of low-medium boost forced induction cause I dont think you would need a *****-to-the-walls engine in that case (to reach 400HP). Same with nitrous but, you'll never have to fill a bottle.

Do not set HP goals set performance goals.
That said by most opinions my car has to be somewhere near the 400rwhp mark and is daily driver friendly, in spring I even had 3.42s in it yet, and went 12.6 first night out on a rich mailorder tune.
In a lighter f-body you could certainly tolerate more cam.
A budget 355 could help wring out a little more power as well.

To do things "cheap" you need to do them just once and get it right, I am on my 4th torque converter, third set of rockers, second set of tires(first not worn out just wrong tires) etc. the list goes on.

4th Torque converter? What happened to the 1st 3?

Thats a good point about the performance goals. I know I want to keep up to both my friends LT1s whom run in the low-mid 12's. I don't know if thats easy or can be done on a very limited budget. My 94 has had already some mild port work and has about 11:1 compression, the head gaskit blew when it was still my buddies car. The Opti is throughly trashed due to moisture and in need of exhaust work. I was thinking of starting with a new opti or deltec and headers with dual or single cutouts(Havent made my mind up) with the stock cat-back, then going from there

Well if the car in your sig is the one you are wanting to mod, im going to say its M6 because your AutoXing.

You could make 400rwhp on a budget easy. (Depends on teh budget )

Best setup I ever had on the street in my daily driver was my stock vortech supercharged car. After I blew up the stock motor, the only thing I should have done was put in a mild blower cam and ported the stock heads and lower the compression a bit and left the thing alone. Would have been a solid, reliable 11 to 10 sec car that would have been a blast to drive and would have never had any issues in any kind of weather.

The problem is we all get "use" to the power and we want more and get this fixation in our minds that we have to have more so we end up going crazy with these builds and we either 1)never finish them or 2) end up spending to much money and complicate our setups to the point where we don't feel comfortable driving them everyday. Then you end up with a beater to drive and you park fun car only to drive it every once in a while and never enjoy it like you did before you went crazy with it.

Maybe this is just my story....

Well I am leaning towards getting a good set of flowing heads, with a matching cam probably from Elliotportworks. But 1st doing the exhaust work and opti taken care of. Leaning on getting a 3400-3600 stall torque converter for the A4 and that will probably be it for a while....

you can do a 400rwhp car with a stock bottem end. I consider that "pushing" the limits of a stock bottem end LT1.
