Timing Chain....
Besides the GMPP timing set, what is another one that can be used with stock timing cover? I saw Lunati made one for the earlier LT-1's for like 150 bucks, and the GMPP set is 250. Remember my car is a 97. Any help is appriciated. I have a feeling im just going to have to bite the bullet and buy the GMPP set?

are you running an electric water pump?
if so, just grap a standard SBC OE roller cam timing set.
I'm running one of the cloyes street "true" roller sets on mine, has the ability to have it retarded 4*, straight up, and adv. 4*..
I believe I paid $79 dollars for mine out of jegs???
gotta watch out about some of those timing sets that will infact "fit" the motor.. but some may not have the gear on the back side of the chain sprocket to run the water pump- no big deal if you have an EWP, but would make it rather difficult to spin the stock on if you don't have the drive gear in there!

With all this talk of upgrade who has actually snapped a stock set??? Just a little food for thought.
I am not saying any of these options are bad but let's consider for a moment you have someone like me REUSING a stock set with 41K on it when I put the AI package on and it is fine, then consider I am still running the what 7-8hp it takes to drive the waterpump too because I am running a stocker there too. If you are worried about the timing set and going to an electric pump anyway just think of how much load you take off the chain with the electric waterpump.
Just to make things clear too GM made stocker for the unvented and vented optis, then an LT4 and an LT4 ED set which are different so know what you are buying when comparing prices.

Im not sure were i got mine its been along time and i orderd parts from alot of different places. I think i got it from Doug Herbert performance. i wish i waited they also have an adjustable set now to. Here is a link for summit http://store.summitracing.com/egnsea...115+4294924746
I am not saying the stock chain is the ultimate piece or anything just that for a mild street car like most of you have it is foolish to drop $200+ on a timing set when the $60 stock set is reliable.
Merv, someone somewhere sometime has broken every last piece in this motor, a single failure does not a pattern make. I know of a handful of LT4 Extreme Duty set failures, more than I have seen on stockers actually, does not mean they are weak just means a few folks managed to snap them.
