Default Car Caught on fire - Story

Just Wanna say first everyones ok, car is fine i drove it half a mile to friends warehouse/car accessory place

Car's Been sitting for 3 weeks..All we did today was a valve adjustment, put starter, alt, belt back on.. and took it for a test drive for about 5-10 miles was fine

I drove it about 50-60 miles got to my friends house and popped hood and my friend reved it up with the TB to around 3-4 grand 2-3 seconds later a puff of grey smoke would come out of the passenger side down below the headers i was like wtf??? figured eh its the exhaust leak or something...

So Me and my girl where passing over on a bridge and the cabin started filling with smoke so i turned off the car then turned it back on threw it in drive and burned off at about 6 grand to the gas station 100 feet away... popped the hood looked down orange everywhere under the header went in started yelling at the guy behind the counter and grabbed the fire extinguisher man iv never pulled a pin faster in my life sprayed some on the ground made sure it was good then put it out...... damn it was a rush someone pulled over behind me and said there was flamed under the cabin area and when i burned off it was going out the whole back of the car

Friends down the road came, with a jack and a flashlight inspected it and called another friend he opened his warehouse and let me drive it in where we ran the car for 15 minutes no oil would shoot out of anywhere its leaking in the front where it has been still but its been doing that.. me and my friend are gonna rewrap every wire tomorrow under the hood with heater wrap and elec tape my mechanic says elec fire but im not sure

That sucks man. Fire is no fun to deal with. Neither is the damage it causes.

I don't understand why the rpm's were revved. In my experience, all it does is make a bad situation worse.

It could have been worse though... a car on fire at a gas station...

Good thinking on getting that fire extinguisher and not water.

I had my alternator catch on fire the day I bought my '92 rs a few years back. Thank God I had a sprite in the car! I had to run new wires for everything to work properly again. Fires Suck!

Bummer. I've carried an extinguisher in my car since my first mod. Never had to use it, but I feel better having it just in case.

Damn, its good everyone is ok though and your car isn't a burnt out shell.
At least it wasn't a fuel line fire, I guess they go up pretty quick when one of those happen.

You need to make sure your dipstick isn't poppin' out under load.
Fires suck...almost burned my old ride to the ground because oil had splashed onto the headers continueously without me knowing. Thankfully I was close to my engine builders place cause I used both of my fire extinguishers and the fire kept coming. Ended up having to hose down the entire motor. Was a friggin' mess afterwards....

Wow, you are lucky bro! I had a small one start on mine a month or so ago while I had it idling in the garage. One of the plug wires had got hot enough from the headers that it started to burn. I was damn glad I went back in the house to get something I forgot before I pulled out to leave. One good squirt with the fire extinguisher and it was out. Now I have my plug wires dropping down from the valve covers with fire boots. Also have a extinguisher in the car now.

Which brings up a good question...

Where can a guy buy a good bolt-in fire extinguisher for a car? I seem to recall it needs to be a certain type (ABC?)...

Firefighters in the house, please chime in.

Check behind the intake, LT1's are notorious for oil leaks in this area, the oil sending unit is also back there, check that one too..

Yea I had a oil leak from the front main seal and it smoked like crazy. So first thing ever bought for my car was a fire-extinguisher... Glad to hear everyone was ok!

Well its a new motor but that doesnt mean no leaks.. my mechanic put it together not me (well I did some) him, me and a few LS1 owners looked at the car couldnt see **** where to feel/look for the oil sending leak i know the manifold is the back of the intake

BTW should it be safe to tune the car tomorrow? Its needed a tune for months even though it only has 800 miles we will have a fire extinguisher at the ready... but iv run the car only smoke is the crap on the headers from the fire btw anyway to clean it? carb cleaner wipe down? let the rest burn

just put in a new dipstick because it seemed the oil was 2 inches all around the dipstick and dry everywhere else with the starter off but obiviously its still leaking
