Default Lt1 vs 5.0 fox mustang

i'm saving for a weekend drag/fun street car. right now i'm leaning towards a 87-93 5.0 fox mustang. however i figured out today that i could get a lt1 camaro for about the same price.

What would be some + sides to getting a lt1 over a 5.0?

You will be in the cool club with all of us Chevy Guys..
Them little Fox Bodies are fast with Bolt-ons, but I have seen many of times where the LT1 has taken them down. It's just more power, and alot more potential with the LT1.

a fox-body is superior over an f-body when it comes to drag racing (weight, wheelbase). however, f-bodies have potential with their larger displacement motors, but that doesn't mean you can't go bigger in a fox-body, either. when it comes to power, you can get cheap parts for both. it's all about what u really want. i have noticed people generally think f-bodies look much nicer than fox-bodies. you just have to examine your priorities.

Get the F-body. I had a supercharged 92 LX 5.0 and it was fun as hell till it got stolen. But I still love the Camaro so much more. More potential and why not start out at around 300hp instead of workin your way up to 300 and then some?! Just my 2 cents. And generally the 5.0 had 180-210hp at the crank.

fox bodies are a lot eaiser to do a wheelie in and look real fast no matter how slow it is, lol. f-bodies look fast just sitting there!!

Like everyone else said, the LT1 will be faster than the fox body in stock form. It's also a Chevy which was a big plus for me. Once you start modding, I believe the mustang is a little easier to work on. The mustang is also a little lighter and you start with a much better rearend.

I was facing the same decision as you when I bought my LT1. I was looking at F-Bodies and Fox Bodies. I went for the F-Body because of the stock performance and, looks, then I found the right deal on the F-Body. I have also been a life long Chevy guy. I am now thinking about parting out my Z-28 and putting the LT1-4L60E combo into a fox body. I think that I can pull it off for less than the cost of an rearend upgrade.

I have had both. The fox body can be made fast but it takes more to do so. When I got my lt1 I raced a friend with a H/C Fox with much weight reduction. I took him in the eighth and he took me in the quarter when I was bone stock. When I put on the bolt ons I beat him worse in the eighth and took him in the quarter.

IMO, LT1 parts arent as cheap as the vast aftermarket of 5.0 parts.
So when it comes to maintainance and modding I think you will save more making a 5.0 fast. 5.0s have cheap easily replacable distributers and LT1s have opticraps and very expensive coils and ICMs and waterpumps.
5.0s engine management are easier and not as sohphisticated as the LT1 as far as tuning and mods.

You can do mostly everything yourself with a 5.0 because of its easily accessible position in the engine bay, sparkplugs, engine overhaul, etc
LT1s are fast and track ready out of the factory, while 5.0s are slow slugs stock especially with crappy slushboxautomatic trannies.
Anyone can work on a 5.0, but most ole school mechanics are very incompotent when it comes to working on more sophistcated LT1s even some GM techincians cant diagnose some of the gremlins of the LT1

I currently own 2 Fox cars and a 95 Camaro, 6spd. I wouldn't trade the Camaro for a hundred Mustangs. Stock for stock there is no comparison. Bolt on for bolt on and so on and so on. I think you get it. Their is alot more technology going into LT1's now days. Get the LT1, YOU WON'T REGRET IT!

stock for stock the lt1 would be faster, but if you are going to modify it, and all you care about is going fast, buy a fox body. That is one of the easiest cars to make go fast, they already have a stout rear end, plenty of aftermarket parts for it, they are CHEAP, and lots more room in the engine bay.

If I was planning on a full on drag car, I would buy a fox body. So much aftermarket for them.. turbo kits, superchargers, etc. A lot easier to work on since that is all you will be doing.

Theres no replacement for displacement. Sure you can do a swap in the fox body but your alreadt done with the f-body. There more aerodynamic. Parts for the fox body are eaiser to come by. Hell, i think i seen a h/c package for sale at my local walgreens!! lol.
