Default 97+ tail lights

So for people out there that put the 97+ tail light lenses on your 93-96 cars, did you use the 97+ harness, or did you rewire your harness? Does the 97+ harness just plug into place of the 93-96 harness?? Curious, guess I'm getting tired of orange brake lights.

Well I haven't been in there since putting the 97+ lenses on there over a year ago, but I know that the brake light and turn signal are both to one bulb holder. So now even though I have orange turn signals, I also have orange brake lights. I was wondering if the harness clips in somewhere, and if its just interchangeable with a 97+ harness, or if people that have done this to their 93-96 cars just cut and spliced their stock harness???

If you take a test light, identify which wire powers brake light bulb/socket in orange piece, cut that wire, so it will light up only when you need the turn signal, and it should eliminate the orange coming on when you step on the brakes.

Right, but then I would have to splice that wire I just cut into the other bulb holder correct? The one where I just have solid red, but should light up brighter when I apply the brakes???? Both don't light up when I hit the brakes.

haha I had the same prob on my 91 when I put the ??-90 GTA lights in back. I didn't know the 91-92 were different (and cooler). So my genius friend re-wired my rear light harness lol OY

Good thing you did your homework haha

Right the T/A's didn't have any orange at all any years, so I guess you would never tell the difference.

I guess I will just attempt to cut and splice the harness some day. Anyone have a 97+ harness just in case though??

Well I sort of went the easy route, my local scrap yard happened to have one 4th gen car, and it some how miraculously was a 97. So now I have the proper harness, how do I get the middle panel off, the one between the tail lights??

Anyone who did the harness swap, your help would be appreciated, I don't really know what to do now that I have the harness, neither the Haynes or the Chiltons says how to take that panel off.

Remove the taillights, then remove the 4 nuts holding the panel.

Thanks, that solved one issue.

Now on to the next thing in my way, I got the harness installed, and I still have brake lights on the same bulb holder as turn signals!!!

I though the harness was going to be a plug and play deal???

Anybody??? I really need help on this, I'm starting to go nuts.

i'm trying to track down my post i did a while back. I did the swap and you have to run a wire from your new harness to the break switch under the dash. it's pretty easy but it's extra work. You have to cut something and then use the wire you run to the front. Let me search for the link for you

Can't find it but there was a post about installing Import Tails from Japan and they use the '97+ harness. But you only have to worry about where to tap the brake light to the brake switch

Well that won't be too bad if you can remember or see where you tapped it in, thanks.
I take it I can just split the line off in two at the back, and run the one line up to the brake switch?? Thanks again for the quick response.

I also don't have reverse lights! Now that I think about it, I've never been able to see when I back up at night, I don't think I've ever had reverse lights, not when I had stock tail lights, 97+ lenses with factory harness, or now. Is there a separate fuse for the back up lights??

The light madness saga.

No, the '97+ harness should plug in and let your reverses work. They aren't on a seperate fuse. on the '96- harness there is 4 wires from the body. On the '97+ there is 5 wires. The harness plugs in only one way so you'll see the 5th wire from the
97+ tail harness that's extra and not actually on the body harness of the earlier car. You cut it from the tial harness and run a wire up the drivers side and above the pedals. From there on out i can't remember how to hook it up. But there is a wire coming off the pedal that only allows power to flow when it's being pushed. You have to cut it. You don't tape into it or you'll have an issue. Then you hook your run wire up to the one that still lights up when you push the brake. You have to use a 12v light tester to make sure it's the right one. Hook 'er up and it's good to go Unfortunatly i cannot remember what one it is... So don't do it until you know what one it is and have pictures to show you for sure.~Cole~
