Default Stock oil pump shaft?

Is the stock shaft that drives the oil pump for LT1's a steel shaft? I got this new high flow pump and it says i HAVE to use a steel one or else the warranty is void. It's delaying the build of my motor so i kinda NEED to know. Thanks guys

The stock one is alright, the little plastic Coupling on the bottom of it is the piece that is crap. Get the Melling one at Autozone, it's all metal. Cost me like $6.

The stock drive shaft is fine (and lighter). The same goes for the stock oil pump. Anything else eats up HP in N/A applications. I have never seen one of the plastic couplings fail. They don't really do anything once everything is put together correctly.

You can't re-use them thought, you have to break it to get it off. I trust my metal piece, it's only about 10 grams heavier..

Here is the perfect comparison.. the Factory is on the left without the litle plastic Coupling, and the Melling is on the right. The Melling one is lighter, I felt them both before putting it in, and I trust that metal Coupling more than the plastic one.

The factory shaft that I was referring to is part number 03998287. It weighs 106 grams. The plastic coupling weighs 1 gram. I have not been able to kill either.

Use a melling. After I installed my cam I broke the white coupling at the bottom of the oil pump witin 50 miles. It's like russian roulette if you ask me.

Merv,

I'm not arguing with you, just voicing my own opinion. I have built a bunch of 7000+ rpm LT1's with these parts without any kind of issues. I can't see the plastic coupling being an issue unless it is reused or put in a bind. I will also remind you that their are thousands of high mile LT1's (and other small blocks) running around with that plastic coupling.

Take Care,

Daren

I know who that was. I've done a couple of F body IHRA Pure Stockers also.
Let me know when you get ready.

There is no strain on that sleeve. If everything is properly aligned and installed, the plastic one won't fail. I've been doing this since 1960, and have never had one fail. Millions of Chevys have gone hundreds of thousands of miles with plastic sleeves with no problems.
