Default Im getting a cam. What specs should I get?

Alright, i just made a thread about how my timing chain broke. Well, that means i should probably get a cam since it's right there...As of now, I have LT headers, Matching Y-pipe going to the stock I-pipe threw a dynomax muffler, LT4 KM and a tune. (a few others, but those are the power mods)

I want a cam that will give me a good gain, but I want the car streetable. I was fine the way my car was before, but I did want some more top end. I figure a cam would be the best way to go, especially since Im getting a new timing chain.

What specs should I get? I don't know too much about it, so I would like some imput. I do want it to have that nice sound though.

Thanks guys.

With that cam and my other mods, would it be possible to see high 12's? Currently, with my mods i ran an 8.4 in the 1/8.

Also, will that cam give my car a nice sound with my current exhaust set up?

I can get a different brand cam, correct? It would just be a good idea to follow those specs?

How much gas mileage will i lose? I would think the car would be worse with a cam...

I'll be getting new lifters as well, I heard that was essential to doing the job correctly.

With a good tune the gas mileage would be about what you are getting right now IF you drive the car the same way as you do right now IMO

i'd use the 222/230 crane GM846 from Summit. I've heard that the XFI grinds are hard on the stock valves....but Lloyd Elliot might not know what he's talkin about....

definitely think so with some good tires, what size rims out back? Used to run Goodrich KDs in the back, about 17psi at the track those hooked good and were great on the rain, street, etc. Nitto Drags would be good to, think you could crack a 12.9 maybe better. What do you run now?

I would even go as far as to upgrading to a heavy duty timing chain/gear set along with a stronger valvetrain. I wouldn't risk running any aftermatket cam on the stock valvetrain.

you can run most stelf cams on stock valves and most still are. The timing chain is something most change due to miles or damage. Anyone with an EWP might as well change because you can run any 91+ factory roller timing chain and SA gear makes a GREAT piece for less then $50. Stock lifters are fine, they should be inspected before reused. i'd upgrade to a set of Comp pushrods because of strenght and price, one less thing to go wrong. Springs are a must! And after all that money spent why stop. CNC motorsports sells a nice set of Full roller 1.6 rockers for $150 that are built based off the Crane Gold rockers and use Crane internals.

So, in order for me to get a cam I have to order from a magazine? Can I just have the shop where my car is getting worked on order it? I mean, does it have to be a gm847? Could I get another cam with the same specs?

Also, does anyone have the full specs on that cam? Keep in mind, I'm not getting any head work done, so I don't want this cam to be too much. I heard that people lose low end getting the wrong cam...I want to make sure my car will be faster and isn't going to be a bitch for everyday driving, you know? The most important thing, is that i want to stay reliable!

My timing chain broke, which is why I am considering the cam. Most likely I'm going to get a better chain this time. Most likely, i'll have some bent valves and need to replace those. If that happens, I'm just going to get 1.6rr. The shop gets parts whole sale and could get my lifters 3 bucks each. Im going to need springs as well. How much are pushrods? I didn't think about getting that? Is it necessary?

If you can't get 12's from a cc503 you should burn your car to the ground.

Judging from your posts it seems you need to do alot more reading up. These topics have been covered in depth.

Go with a custom grind man, thats the only way your going to get everything you want out of a cam.
