Default Best way to get streetable 400-450HP LT1 engine.

Hi, I want my 1994z28 A4 to be able to put out about 400-450 hp while still being able to pass emissions testing. I know this is not any kind of power compared to a lot of guys on here but perhaps some of you can tell me what you did to get to these numbers before you got to 800+HP. I do not race ever so drag times is not a factor but I do like to drive 140+ on the freeway really late every once in a while and would like the car to accelerate better through the later gears. So basically I wanted to know what would be the best way to achieve these numbers. My sig has all of my mods. Any info and recommendations would be great. Thanks
-Shane

Turbo S/C or N20 is about the only way you are going to get that 400+ goal and pass all emissions. But I would first talk to all the H/C places LE, AI, Port pros, send them some emails tell them your set-up you plan on and what restrictions you have see if they can help you out with a nice H/C set-up before going the FI route

If you looking for those #s you have better have some money to spend, since it seems that you like to drive the car I would suggest getting good parts that are going to be dependable. Another thing, are you looking for those #s at the wheels or at the crank? reason I ask is 450 at the crank isn't all that hard, but 450 to the wheels isn't just bolt ons. I would say forged rotating assembly, LE or AI heads, matched cam, and full bolt ons should get you close to the 400-450 to the wheels with a good tune

Daily driving....I drive on the highway most of the time for over 30 miles at a time pretty much everyday. but Like I said The only thing I would really want more power for would be when I want to get up to 140+ on the freeway really quick and overtaking cars on the freeway really quick

Mild h/c, stays smog legal, drives great, and then spray the ***** out if it.

s/c it but like previously mentioned spend the money ahead of time on fortifying the bottom end (forged pistons and lowering compression for dependability).

If you really want high horsepower fairly reliable and pass emissions. Get a decent portjob, 383 cubes custom blower cam, and get a good set of pistons that matches your combustion chamber while giving you proper quench. the blower will make things street able while the portjob will help reduce the stress to the blower and ultimately your engine (less resistance due to the portjob gives the blower an easier time filling the cylinders). The 383 cubes will make it so you wont need to run much boost. The proper quench, along with pistons will help with emissions and a good blower cam will also help with emissions. Finally follow with two good high flow catalytic converters one for each cylinder bank and you MIGHT just pass emissions at 450hp.

You could reach these goals on a Mild 383 w/ Ported Stock castings and Intake.

stock rebuild with forged pistons, ported stock castings and an ATI s/c. That will give you a daily driver that will pass smog anywhere and get good mileage.

Keep running 140 and you wont need 450 hp very long. But I understand what you mean, sometimes its all I can do to keep that suck'a at the speed limit.
