Question Need help with Mods???

I recently bought a stock 97 Z28 M6, very fun to drive, and a lot more horses than my old 240sx. Problem is I have no idea what to mod?? The car only has 85,000 miles, and completly stock other than a K&N air filter. Can anyone help with some suggestions on what i should do??? My goal in the end is to have a fast enough car to go to the track and turn mid to low 13's.

I would start with some Longtube headers, a non-flowmaster cat-back exhaust, and maybe some stickier tires.

Those should get you atleast in the Mid-13's. Then you could do a few simple mods such as a 160 degree thermostat, or possibly spray a small 50-75 shot of nitrous. That might even get into the high 12's if you can hook up.

Sounds good, what brand should i go with for the headers, or does it matter? Sticker tires is a must, for sure. I was thinking some 17''x9.5 ZR1 wheels, and run Drag Radials in the back, but just a basic tire in the front. Dont mean to be a newbie at this, but what is the 160' Thermostat for? Last thing, if i do the 50-75 shot, would i have to upgrade anything else for the car to take it?

I would do some basic mods that are daily driver friendly and won't breaK the bank. I would start off with a Cold Air Intake (Moroso, K&N, etc.) then go with full exhaust including Long Tube Headers with an Off-road y-pipe into a Catback that you like. At this point you will run low to mid 13's atleast I did with those mods and the car will sound amazing. I would also have a tune done by PCMforless to get the car running just right and you should be good to go and running where you want it to. Also those are great supporting mods for further modifications so its a good a basis to start off with a CAI and Full Exhaust.

I would go with a set of ceramic coated pacesetter long tubes. For the Y-pipe, if your car gets inspected/smogged you will want to go with a catted one, if not you may as well go with the off-road Y.

Then just pick a catback that you think sounds good.

The 160 thermostat just makes your car run cooler.

I would do these mods before really looking into the shot of nitrous.

Youre on the right track, with great questions.
First things first.
Cold Air Intake, Headers, and Catback Exhaust.
Then little things like a ported throttle body, air foil, and 160 degree thermostat.
Then, gears.

After those things, then you want a custom PCM tune.
PCMforless.com and Madtuner.com are the best LT1 mail order tunes, and can net you 8-12 more hp with just bolt ons.
Your stock PCM is set for your stock parts. When you add performance items, it does not pick up and calculate the more air thats coming in and out of your engine. Thats what a custom tune will do.

Since you have an M6, 3.73's or 4.10's will really wake up your car, and make it louder because your car will ride at slightly higher rpms... its a win win situation.

After you get all the basic bolt ons, you go from there.
CLICK HERE for a decent article on what good bolt ons are, the LT1 bolt ons are on the bottom half of the page.

I really appreciate all the help from everyone. This is going to be the first car I am going to build up.

Can I buy some of the parts on here???

Oh and btw the car came with a K&N Air Filter, probably needs to be oiled, and cleaned though. Other than that its bonestock.

That's the best way to get them, that's how mine was.
You will start with the small stuff, then next thing you know you are swapping Engines like I am doing..

You need a certain number of posts I believe before you can buy, but I am not sure. Maybe its just sell.
I bought my Moroso CAI (cold air intake) and SLP Loudmouth off members from this site. Saved myself a couple hundred bucks too.

Go to the parts for sale forum in the parts classifieds and just scan the first 5-7 pages for LT1 ads. People are selling stuff all the time, I think its the busiest forum on this site... and that is saying something.

LT1 intakes and catbacks don't last long so scan it every other day, and If I where you I would buy headers new.
If you buy them used get them in good-great shape, and make sure they are ceramic coated...
New coated headers aren't crazy expensive and its worth it to get new ones.
Good luck to you.
( I also picked up my new rims on here, four 17 X 9.5 GM Silver ZR1's off a 2000 SS for $300 )

Well, thank you.
There are many guys on here that what have told you the same thing If didn't get to you first, thats what is great about the site.

Also, don't be afraid to search several pages back for info on cold air intakes, headers and catbacks.
Some of the best threads are only a couple clicks away, and you'll get much better answers then starting a new thread.

since your an m6, you could think about a short throw shifter like pro 5.0 or hurst, and a shorter stick like a WS6store or Lou's. also dont forget suspension like LCA's, Relo. Brackets, Tourqe Arm, and panhard bar. always helps to get the power to the pavement. Plus all the boltons the guys have mentioned above, im just adding things no one else has. Good luck

Get a lingenfelter CAI. Its alot cheaper and the filter is a MONSTER. If your stock rubber elbow is banged up I would suggest a TF intake elbow.

headers (Shorties... MAC Mids/ long tubes Jet hots or Hookers) 15-20hp
Exhaust (SLP LOUD MOUTH) 15-20hp
Water Pump (CSI electric) 5-10hp

that should get you started....

Then...

4:10 gears
1.6 rockers
PCM Performance Tune
