I hate to sound like a jerk, but you purchased a heads/cam/stalled car and expected to get good mileage for a daily driver?
I'm cam only with tuning and a 3000 stall and I get about 9 in the city in heavy stop and go driving. That's one of the downers of running a higher stalled car. My suggestion to you -- obviously you're not too concerned with performance, swapping out the converter. Get it retuned with a more conservative tune on 87 octane.
Also -- as far as normal maint. stuff. Check your tire pressure, alignment, and condition of the ignition system (plugs, wires, optispark, ignition coil). Make sure the air filter is clean. Change the fuel filter. Swap the O2 sensors (only with AC Delco OE Replacements). Common sense stuff (because you purchased the car used) that might have been over looked by other owners.
It also might help to drive the car more conservatively, and avoid sitting in traffic (when you're not moving, you're getting 0mpg). Instead of sitting and waiting to take a left turn, make three right turns.
Its a lot of small stuff that you can do to help, granted its still a decently modded car built more with performance in mind, not fuel economy -- so there is only so much you can do. Or just find some old beater you can use for a DD.
i get 9-10 MPG with mods in my sig gears play a big roll then remember our tachs in these cars are about 200 higher then what they really are
So I idle @ around 500-600rpm? I thought 800 was correct. :\

That thing rocks for no more than it is! I think the older diesels (2004-down) are rated a little lower but probably drive very similar.
