i believe the only difference is that the bore is larger and the storke is a lil bit longer...same idea as a 383...just bored and stroked a little more...correct me if im wrong.

Yup. Bore & stroke is bigger in the 396.

I was wondering about the performance differances, HP, torque and the RPM ranges that the peaks might fall around.

I know there's no replacement for displacement, but the right built 383 can put the right Fbody in the 9" and produce 500+. I've seen MANY 450+ RWHP 383's. I dont know hom much more a 396 cost to build but i'm sure if you wanna go that fast, money is no object

396 is harder on things, rod ratio is worse, piston pin is in the ring pack....for a higher mileage engine 383 is the way to go...weekend cruiser I would consider a 396 and DID consider it...I just got a good deal on my 383 shortblock.

www.fast93z.com Tony Shepherds 396 is absolutely wicked! Theres quite a few guys on here pushing 500 plus to the tires on both 383 and 396 setups. I plan on being at 500 plus with my 383 in the next couple weeks. That is very hard to achieve with an LT1 unless you go solid roller with a hugely upgraded intake such as a converted single plane.

the 396 just scares me cause of the wall thickness, although im sure it could be worse
