Default Cam in a stock motor??

well, im not ready to rebuild yet becuase it runs ok and i dont have another DD... but id like to put a cam in my car becuase for one i like the way it sounds, and two the power gain would be nice... im question is... how well will a cam work in a stock motor... stock heads intake and such... probably will put a 52mm throttle body on... am i going to feel a noticable difference or is it just a waste of time... also what cam would be good for an application like this... hotcam, or some sort of comp cams i think i see alot of peopl euse the cc306... that might be to aggressive... id ont know.... im an autobody technician not a mechanical one so im not very hip on engines... any help is greatly appreciated... and also if anybody knows of an install guide thatd be great...

How many miles on the engine?

You wont want to go with to big of a cam without heads, but people run cam only cars all the time. Make sure you do a clean install.

I would talk to some other people But I have a comp custom ground cam, and head work. But if you search the boards you should be able to find a good cam for stock heads.

GM847 in a stock headed car would be pointless. CC305 is another decent stock head cam ... very similar to the hotcam.

For stock heads, the Crane 210/224 all the way. Held the stock-head LT1 record for years. Somewhere in the 11.4 range at 116!

one guy above said his freind did good #'s with jsut the hot cam and rockers... if i dont do rockers will i still see a significant power increase or not so much... i really dont want to take off the intake and do all that stuff... its just a pain on lt1's to work in that engine bay and i dont have the time to pull the motor...right now im thinking either hotcam (seems to be the simplest to go with) someone mentioned the cc305 ( i know comp cams makes good cams), and the crane one that the other guy said iv never even ehard of...

You gotta' be kiddin' me that a) you've never heard of it and b) you'd write it off just because you never heard of it! It's the Crane 227. I had it and ran low 12's at 112 with it. Frank95Z ran 11.40 at 116.6 mph with it cam-only.

From Frank: "I run the Crane 210/224 and a lot of the guys down here in the South do also. My car is a lightweight bolton street car(not to be confused as a stock eliminator car) and I believe that it is one of the fastest stockhead cars in the country. The Crane 210/224 combo is much overlooked."

LSA is your lobe seperation angle. It is the number of degrees between your intake and exhaust lobe centerlines. Lower numbers give you more overlap, rougher idle, etc. Higher numbers give you smoother idle, wider powerband, etc.

So since this is your DD, the 114 will probably be your best bet between the 2 305s. Better for driving everyday, and it should have a little wider powerband.

But all in all, the 305 is a pretty good off-the-shelf cam-only cam. You can do better by getting a custom grind, and you can probably do better by looking around more. However, the 305 is proven.
