I know that 97 f bodies have a crank position sensor and they are obd 2. But is there any other difference between the two. Was wondering because i have a 97 Trans Am and am thinking about buying a motor out of a 95 camaro.

95 was the last year of obd1. id be willing to wager that the longblock will be the same. i think in 96 the fbodys got a 10 hp increase, but i dont know what changed to give that increase.

 

It was the dual cat exhaust I believe. Nothing significant changed in the motor.

 

i believe head castings changed just a little and possibly cam?

 

heads of a 97 are more finished and flow a little more but the heads from a 95 which are 643 casting are better for porting. the cams changed a little but not much at all. dual cats on 97 and obd2. 95 was the last year for obd1. 95 years actually had the odb2 type connection on the inside but are obd1 they just require a special connector. i dont think there was really anything else.

 

The 96+ cam was slightly different however it is a little smaller than the 93-95 so I doubt that produced any power increases. The heads might be a little better though.

 

well it will just drop right in and run right no nothing to do to the harness or anything. I know the crank position sensor can be deleted through a tune

 

In FBodies, 93 Cam is it's own year, it's also the biggest ^_^ The 10hp increase is the dual-cat exhaust. I don't know the years for all the head casting changes, but as said, there are differences and pros/cons to each.

On a side note: My friend's 94 Vette has the OBD2 connector as well.

 

93-95 had the same cam. The specs are: 202/207 0.450/0.460 lift 116 LSA

96-97 had: 00/207 0.447/0.459 lift 117 LSA

yeah, as long as you are still using the 97 computer and harness there shouldn't be any problem.

95 was actually a mixed year. My 95 has dual cats and everything else a 96 does.

 

I thought the casting numbers were 374? or am i wrong... that is the earlier year casting

 

if you are putting a 95 motor in a 97 and using 97 pcm, harness etc. wouldnt you have to change the optispark to the vented one unlike the 95 non vented one. also the coil packs 97 have the single connector and 95 has the dual
