Same gains here. I had the moroso CAI with an alluminum scoop under the directing air up to the filter.

I figured i bump an old thread instead of starting a new one...

Im in the process of this conversion myself, and after some researching and taking measurements, i noticed the late model vettes (C4 C5 C6) use the same idea of retrieving cold air from in front of an inclined radiator.
So im thinking of this as an alternative to mounting a space-eating LS1 lid on top of my radiator, plus i havent seen anyone here do this (from what ive searched) so itll be unique.

Heres a C5 K&N installed to show the general setup:

See how the plastic elbow tube flattens out (where the K&N decal is) as it bends up and over the top of the radiator? (The stock Vette intake duct also does this) This could save some inches in radiator-to-hood clearance as opposed to having a big boxy lid up there.

Heres the different types of Vette K&Ns:

C5 K&N:

C6 K&N:

C6 Z06 K&N:

I did a rough photoshop of Jimbob's engine bay picture and put in the Z06 K&N to kinda show how it will look:

the filter wont obviously sit up in the crossbar there, itll sit down a little lower, right in front of the A/C condenser im figuring. I need to find out measurements of the intake duct but its hard to do without actualy buying this whole K&N kit.

Out of the 3 Vette intakes, i think the C6 Z06 has the best shot at fitting... Heres why:

Dimension A: thinner than a circular coupler/air filter neck (which the other Vette intakes have) - which would fit better in the tight space in front of the F body AC Condenser
Dimension B: as mentioned before, this is where the duct will rest atop the radiator

The AC condenser still needs to be dropped and the radiator tilted back a little and I might still have to cut a notch in the engine bay support beam (though not as big of a cutout as Jimbob's pic, just enough to pass the intake duct down) I need dimensions of this K&N intake though to really find out how much cutting/massaging needs to be done.

Would this be as effective as a lid setup? Since the stream of air flowing up from the street isnt directly making a straight shot at a panel filter, but instead this elliptical Z06 filter is sucking in air within the space in front of the radiator... but then again if it works well for the Z06 then it should be fine in theory.

Opinions, etc bring them on

i wonder how that clears the hood. looks like it would be slightly higher than a lid towards the bend.

lol looks like the LT1 alternator mounting spot is popular!

I've actually wondered about the Vette CAI design. The only problem is that a C6 Z06 K&N cai is going to be outrageously expensive when you could just find a used SLP lid, or something like it on here for around $50-$75.

The vette ones have me interested, now that I deleted the front 5mph bumper, there is a ton of room up there.

update... i havent forgotten about this...

I started working on this (see my post halfway up this page). I dont want to give out all the details yet but im not exactly using a C5/C6 intake piece. I got my hands on an OEM Z06 Intake and i cut it up to measure and test fit everything and it does not work, at least not without cutting the rad support up, and under a stock hood with A/C.

What im doing now, it does follow the same path though, and i did not have to cut anything on the car (radiator support, etc) and i have a SS hood which has the same tight clearance issues as the flat Z28 hood right in the radiator support area.

Here's what's on my car. I personally would like to have an LS1 lid setup but IMO this works a lot better. The bumper supports, fog lights, and little misc crap was removed and air is directed straight to the filter. What really helps out is the removed A/C system so it has the extra space to stick the filter right in front of the radiator. Im going to eventually stick a polished 4" pipe in place of that rubber piece for a little more "bling", then some LPP headers as well so it looks nicer as well.

I would like to do this I already have a LS1 base and lid just need a hood to make it fit. I do think the vfn fiberglass 3 or 4 inch cowl will let it fit without issues. Just need the money to but one......

Streetdemon2k3, thats a pretty slick setup. Noticeable gain with that, over your regular cold air?

Ive got the LS1 lid also.

Im wondering the same thing...either with the Lid or with a setup like demons the air comes from the same place...in front of the radiator. Is that just a turbo style elbow? Id like to try that with a 3.5 or 4in pipe.

I never had a CAI to compare it to but it gets lots of air. If you stand in front of the car you can see the filter very easily. It has no restrictions whatsoever, and I imagine it would outflow almost every CAI, ram air box, or lid.

Its not a turbo elbow, its a Fernco that's found at the home supplies stores. ALthough it looks decent, I still want to stick a polished pipe there to clean things up a bit.

Im putting a Lid and the Speed Inc. SSRA that they sell for 120 bucks. Thinking i should see good gains over my moroso CAI. I am to drop the wind washer fluid piece for some space. And really open things up for the SSRA. Have to keep the bumper support tho, cant risk anything with a dd.

I was refering to the piece that runs from the furnco hose through the radiator shroud...looks very similar to what the turbo guys run. If I can find that piece reasonable I think Im seriously going to try it out. Thanks for posting it.

Default what about?

Has anyone pushed this CAI/ram air/lid idea to the point where its a sealed system all the way out to the bumper? I've seen the SLP metal duct version for Ls1 cars which moves the air intake point down to the bottom of the radiator I wonder why no one has tried to do this with some kinda tubing/hose to connect to say the back of the fog light area for a true ram air/cold air connectin? If you could find some smaller diameter K&N pod type filters you could make a dual system coming off the bottom of a ls1 lid/box down to the backside of the 2 fog light holes?
