Default new edelbrock LT4 intake just arrived....my thoughts

As the headline says, I just got my new edelbrock LT4 intake in the mail from summit. The first thing that struck me was a small amount of (questionable) CNC work on the top half of the ports where they would meet the heads. Slight core shift put the CNC cutter into some walls more than others, leaving a small step, but that's not the important part, I have a point to make in a sec....Also, as I've seen in other posts, the LT4 intake wears the same casting number as the LT1. My conclusion: edelbrock uses the exact same casting as their LT1 intakes, but puts on a little CNC port work (I assume to get that extra .100" of port height for LT4 heads) and some powdercoat, and charges $65 more for an "LT4" intake. This wouldn't be a problem, except that I plan on removing the powdercoat anyway (grinding off the edelbrock logo, and painting it a different color) and porting it to whatever heads I get (they're pointless unless you plan on porting them beyond what a stock LT1 intake is capable of).

Lesson, (and the point of this thread): I could have just gotten edelbrock's LT1 intake, had a wider selection of potentially compatible heads, had it opened it up to some LT4 heads if desired since it's the same casting and is gonna be ported anyway, and not have to go through the trouble of removing that powdercoat.....for $65 less. I think I may be sending this intake back to summit for a trade.

I hope this is of interest to someone....

-Josh

Of course I have no way to PROVE my theory above since I don't have an LT1 manifold from edelbrock to compare with, but I'd be willing to put money on it. What are yalls thoughts?

...also my camera is screwed up at the moment, or I'd post some pics. When I get it working again, I'll post 'em.

I use www.photobucket.com to host my pics. All you do is make an account and upload them, and then use the hyperlinks, (like [IMG]), under each one in your posts.

Id like to see what the tuners and the porters thoughts on this intake is .Hard to find any solid info on this.Even talking to Edelbrock its pretty dead in my book the info. From what littel i know our stock intake and the lt4 one work very well.I read on here where someone dynoed one with a plus 5 hp gain. The air gap would be a plus im sure.Very good point on the head selection.Edelbrock says it works from 1500 to 6500.Id like to know where the rpm range it works the hardest at mid to high or what?.Is this more of a intake for a stock car or is it going to shine with the right parts mixed with it and tuneing and porting .If i was to get one id prolly go the lt1.Thats 65 $ saved.Or just keep your stock one till the info starts comeing out and save even more $

Do a search using my name "T/A KID" I was lucky enough to get a Edelbrock LT4 intake early and I sent mine to Lloyd Elliot and I should have it back this week.
From his own words, "its about as good as my Fully ported intake in cast form from Edelbrock"
so a Fully ported Edelbrock IMO would be better than a ported stocker.
I'll bring back the thread when I get it and post More pics.

BTW if you got a LT1 intake and then got LT4 heads you would have to weld matterial over the top of the ports before you ported it so it would cover the ports

I might have to pick one up and check it out

Fair enough. I just wanted to be sure we were comparing apples to apples.
