the level of need for a 12-bolt or 9" is totally dependant on what mods you have done to the car and what your plans are for it. you can run 4.10 gears in a stock 10-bolt no problem. you can also break a stock rearend with a mostly stock car. you're looking at shelling out around $2500 for a complete, ready to bolt in 12-bolt or 9" rearend. if you don't need one, you can do a gear swap in a stock rearend for less than $500
Im throwing 4.10's in my 94 this week.. I'll let you know how it turns out..
As far as a 12 bolt or 9" I just saw in the last issue of Super Chevy where i think Moser is selling kits pretty cheap right now
I'll look it up tonight and post back up what it says..
Im going w/ the Summit 4.10's and i bought a Zexel Torsen posi to put in.
I also bought the summit rebuild kit- Came with all Timken bearings so i was pretty happy for $216..
Hell ive broken 2 10 bolts on stock gears, 1 Rear end on STREET TIRES.
Stupid GM 7.5 10 Bolt
I got lucky and got to re-use my pinion shim and carrier shims..
However- with putting 4.10's in the 7.5 you have to grind on center pin for the auburn diff, and grind on the machined steel block in the Zexel diff. to get the pin or the block to clear the ring gear teeth when putting it in.. - be sure the center pin or block is out of the carrier when putting on the ring gear.
What is a pain is getting your measurements and getting the crush sleeve to crush. I used a 2x4 to hold the pinion yoke and used a 3/4" head ratched & 1 1/4" socket to crush the sleeve on the pinion.
but over all- its not that bad.. - easier than rebuilding an engine.
