How much mpg do you lose by switching to 160 thermostat?

My fans are set to 170/180. The only thing I noticed is that it runs cooler.

Hardy har.

It's all just a misunderstanding. I completely follow you all on what you're talking about. It's just simply that if you put a cooler TStat in, it's not going to operate as well as it could/should if the fans were tuned to come on sooner. Just like me, with not having my 160 in yet, but my fans tuned. I'm running cooler, but not near as cool as I could be with the 160 in.

Your fans run a when the AC is on. Is this what you are seeing? I run my AC and it actually runs cooler in stop and go traffic.

This thread is dumb.

Thermostat doesn't change anything except how fast the car gets up to operating temp.

Doesn't change mileage
Doesn't add horsepower
Doesn't affect MPG
Doesn't affect fans
Doesn't make your teeth whiter
Doesn't suppress your appetite

Good luck with your 160 thermostat mod.

wrong.

Thermostats do affect the engine blocks temperature......
Which affects the combustion temp.

For the most efficient burn, the combustion temp needs to be as high as possible.

So....it *can* affect mileage, but most of the time it wont.....there are a ton of other factors aswell.......

Yeah, I guess if you wanna split hairs. No significant differences come from a 160 stat.

That's the point I was trying to make to people. The thermostat is going to cool the engine down just enough so the fans never kick on, but also will keep the thermostat open all the time because it doesn't get cooled down to it's closing temp.

On a healthy engine/cooling system on the open road the fans won't kick on because of adequate air flow whether you're running a 160* or 180* stat.

When running in traffic and the temps go up, factory set fans will kick on at over 200 deg, at which point, both the 160* and the 180* stat will already be open so will have no affect on cooling.

The only benefit of a 160* stat without tuning the fans is allowing the water to enter the radiator sooner, thus allowing it to start cooling earlier which can help on open road driving where the airflow keeps temps down around thermostat temps.

Exactly, Thank You.

I believe what you said about allowing the engine to run near the thermostat temps. However, while that may be true with a 180* or higher, with a 160*, that is not the case. A fully warmed up LT1 chuggin' down the road is not gonna run at 160*, as read by the WP sensor.

160* on the factory gauge I believe since that reading is taken at the head and is always way lower than the true temp taken at the WP.
