Default Death Of A Lt1...

Well guys, i went thru hell with the old girl since burning up a head gasket, installed a brand new opti today and since the install of headers and Y pipe i was on the way to get the new system connected to the old. Started popping a bit due to a little miss, no big deal. Then she started losing power...she wouldnt get past 4500RPM. Well, next thing you know she started struggling to get to 3000RPM. Then like a turd sucked into the intake she died... I went to simply dump the clutch for a restart and did nothing except lock up the back tires. Coasted to the side of the road with anger, confusion and devastation. Well gentlemen the jig is up, a few people here on LS1tech actually know me in person. As any of them will tell you anything about me is that i do as i say. Anyone see a early post about me saying i will go GEN I or GEN III if the new opti or the whole motor doesnt work out it will be replaced by one or the other. Well, GEN I 383 it is. I am done with a OPTI and will never have one be my problem ever again. Now with that said, i know the opti didnt cause the whole motor locking up problem, but i never wanna deal with it again, so a bullet in her and a new heart on the way.

IF ANYONE has any pics of a distributor on the back of a SBC in one of these it would help greatly, even a link to somewhere helpful is greatly appreciated.

RIP 95 LT1 1995-2007 135k miles.
Missed but soon forgotten.

I don't have any pics of one, but I know you should be prepared to cut a chunk out of the wiper cowl to make a carb. fit. As far as the dist. I know a buddy of mine had one of those low profile Mallory's on his.

Why not rebuild the LT1, and put a megasquirt setup on it? People use megasquirt with the ford Edis setup and theres a guy on cz28 that has put the edis on his lt1 to use an ls1 based ecu. Combine the two and you have a very powerful, pontentially easy to tune and use setup.

The problem for many of us is if we want to drive our cars at all we have to keep them legal

No carbs for us!

So is it really illegal to convert something FI to carbed?
Or are you saying that as like a figure of speach?

From what I researched..I got the same thing.
It's Illegal to replace the Factory Engine with anything that is older, but you can replace it with something newer, cause if everything was correctly inplace, the Emissions would be better.

Now here in the real world..we know things are otherwise..

I laugh everytime I hear that about swapping Engine, and think that I went from 420hp to over 600hp..and it was technically legal..

Thinking about his first post..that Engine isn't really dead, just the Ignition System is gone..

When I spun out a Rod Bearing causing loss of Oil Pressure and 4 of the Mains to Spin..keep in mind that was on a pass..that result was a dead Engine.
Funny thing about that, it ran until the Oil Pressure went to nothing, then I shut it down.

If that was the case, the tires would free-spin.

I went to simply dump the clutch for a restart and did nothing except lock up the back tires.

have you thought about this? i dont know wheth you still have the catalytic converter on it or not still, but in some cases if you cat gets completely clogged, its like a blood clot in ur boddy, nothing passes through, and will cause the motor to not be able to move through loss of air flow. if you still have it on,cut the exaust piping right before it, its worth a shot, and could save a ton of money

If the engine is seized, I would assume in an Manual, that it would lock the tires up. If the motor was free, it'd turn. Hence the push-start if your battery is dead.

Thinking back with my army jeep (which is a bad vehicle to relate with), the lower the gears tend to lock up the tires. Then again, I'm almost always on gravel. But if I put it in 3rd or 4th, the motor/tires will spin.

Well, it is gutted with straight pipe, but i was running open Y pipe on the way to the exhaust shop to have the catback hooked back up.

If your main beef with the LT1 is the opti....why not just get a delteq?

Bummer 'bout the engine, but I would definitely find out exactly why it bit the dust and then go from there as far what you want to do engine wise.

Good luck!

note: the delteq still uses utilizes the the "opti" part of the optispark
