With 275/40 R17 and 4.10's I was always sitting close to 3,000 on the freeway, which seemed fine when the car was stock.
With my current setup 3k on the freeway sounded like the world was coming to an end, and with the large increase in power the gears simply were too short. Traction was difficult to attain, and I was flirting with OD
at the track.
After I broke the 4.10's I swapped in 3.23's and am very happy.
So stockish car 4.10's GREAT! Not so stockish 4.10's BAD!

Just to say, I went from a 13.5 to a 13.2 with a gear change of 3.23 to 3.73....you will NOT regret going to 3.73s, so just make sure you get them installed correctly and rock on!!
Guess I'll chime in. I have 96 WS6 A4 with 373's and I love it. I haven't gotten around to getting it tuned yet (I'm a freshman in college and I dont have car with me...so it's just sitting in the garage til next year). Without it being tuned I average 22mpg...I get around 26-27mpg on the highway just cruising (driving easily). I would not go with anything besides 373's. Being uncalibrated for the taller gear, I think the spedometer reads about 10mph faster than I'm really going. I would defintely go with 373's and get the shift points and spedo recalibrated for them if I were you. A higher stall would definitely make it more fun as well. Enjoy the car and have fun.
