Default help

i just intalled a newly rebuilt lt1 in my 95 z28, we went to start it all it will do is turn over will not start. we checked fuel pressure, fuses, took front cover off to check that all was lined up right, then we checked the spark by taking #1 plug out to see if there is spark there was but when grounding out the plug the engine actually fired up for a split second. we are going to try it once more to see if it will do it again. any thoughts on this?

Is it 180 out? Is it "hiccuping" while you are cranking it?

^^ I agree with him, sounds like it is 180 degrees out.

I thought LT1's couldnt be 180 out because the opti only goes on one way?

no it did not do anything but turn over, it should not be 180 out we had the timing dots lined up at 6 and 12 with the cam dowel at 3 which puts #6 tdc then we rotated the engine to 12 and 12 and the cam dowel at 9 which puts #1 tdc and checked to make sure by pulling the plug and checking, then we put the opti on with indicator on it pointing at #1

Your opti should only go on one way...make sure its lined up. Theres a key on the spline that lines up take a look and make sure its on the right way.

That sounds right. Like was said, maybe you missed a spline or two when inserting the opti drive shaft. Additionally, pull your driver side valve cover to double check which valve is open when timing the opti. I know you said you checked fuses, but did you check them all? Also you said fuel pressure was good, I presume you checked it at the rail?

Yes and no. You do have the older unvented opti correct? There's a little key on both sides of the drive which you have to put correctly into the slot on the opti and inside the cam gear. It has been reported that some have inserted it wrong. Also, make double sure the slot is in fact at the 9:00 position. I have had problems in the past with that and turns out it was the angle I was looking at the slot and it was not in the right position--more like 10:00. I made a point to crawl under the car and stick my face right on the timing cover to verify position. Additionally I have used a screwdriver to verify TDC on #1 by feeling for the top of the piston.

Why does it have to be at 9 oclock? If it only goes on properly one way it shouldnt matter what position the spline is in when the opti goes on... maybe this is whats giving me problems...

OK I have no experience with the vented style so I am not so sure.

It's not so much the position of the opti but the position of the engine.
