Default Four Bolt Main Caps?

I am looking at doint a 383 stroker kit for my 94z and was wondering at what point it would be necessary to put four bolt main caps on the lt1. I plan on running boost in the future but that is at least a few years away. Also, I know how much the main caps list for....but if I had the block tore down and everything, can anyone give me a rough estimate on how much it would cost to have it installed? (I know drilling is necessary)

Thanks

I supply the mains, pay the shop 650.00 to hottank, instal the mains,studs,alignbore/hone,bore block, hone block cam bearings and brass freeze plugs. Labor rates may be different but this could be a ball park figure for you.

I paid $850.00 for my Block to get puched out .030" Over, tanked, Honed, new bearings, freeze plugs, Decked to zero, Align bored, and new Main Caps and even all of the ARP Bolts as well. So I guess thats about average then....$650-$850. BTW it's worth the added support for the money. Lets think about it for a minute.... who's to say you put down 500hp at the wheels with a very good combo. Now say you decide to spray a 150 shot or more through it. Now it's common that after so much spraying the bearings could spin. But if you would have paid the extra 500.00 for the main caps(b/c your gonna have to get the block tanked and bored and honed anyways....)You could've avoided the spun bearings. Sometimes it's best just to do the thing right the first time or don't do it at all. I sure wouldn't want to be the guy who saved $500.00 on main caps b/c I wanted to be cheap and spend the money on other stuff and then blow the motor at the track. Just my .02 But if you don't plan on putting down over 500 ish HP. I'd say you'll be fine. But then again who knows....James

I got all the machine work done from a guy in Avon, Indiana. He's retired and builds motors as a hobby. He has full access to a machine shop.

I got ya ll beat. I bought a set of used Oliver 4 bolt 10 degree splayed caps off ebay for around 80 shipped (Included front billet cap). We had to mill the block(Past to stocker location) so the cap would sit flush. My father is a machinist so we set it up Saturday in his Mill and got the caps located. He is in the preosess of buiding a fixture to drill the 10 degree holes. Local machine shop should take care of the line bore for under 150 bux(usually cheaper but he is going to have to use a boring bar, then a hone) So Ill have roughly 230 in mine
As far as your origial question. I laid down 415 to the wheels on my stroker with the stock caps. Just depends on do it now or do it later
