Back to the original question; I believe it depends on 1; what mods are going to be done to the car when it is finished, and 2; what you want to use it for.
If all you are ever going to do is leave it with bolt ons, or even keep it N/A with maybe a few motor mods, I say go 4.10's. You have a M6, and back in the day a buddy of mine topped out his car with me in it in 6th gear with 4.10's and it was still well over 150 MPH, and it will get there faster than 3.90's and a LOT faster than the stock 3.42's.

Yeah sure of course, I mean that's why they make girdles for the cars, it's all ineffective, and just scams.
Anyways it doesn't matter because I'm going with 4.11's from Strange Engineering, and I'm having a professional shop set them up. Also another thing to remember is that it's only a bolt on car. I'm not building on the LT1.

"professional setup" doesnt make a gear stronger either, this job requires a professional. the 4.11 is the stronger of the choices though, but it will still be weaker than stock. As long as you stay on street tires you should be a-o-k, but itll be winding towards the end of the quarter.

what's a girdle going to do for a rearend that will break with 300 rwhp on street tires??
Gears 200
Installation 300
TA Cover 180 or whatever they cost
Value of your unbroken 3.42 rearend to an auto guy 250
Total Money saved: 930
cost of my buddies barely used 12 bolt with 4.10s and 33 spline axles 1850
https://ls1tech.com/forums/western-members/841443-used-moser-12-bolt-sale.html
i dunno i'd just save for the 12 bolt, it becomes an even better deal if you break your 10 bolt and then have to buy another one for 250 bucks just to get your car on the road.

ok a more technical response
i think TA covers are a good investment for the auto guys who are running 11s and want a little bit of insurance. You realize that its not just the caps, but the carrier, axle tubes, and differential housing itself that flex on the 10 bolt. Also like it was mentioned before, the pinion gear is the size of a ******* walnut on 4.10.

Bottom line, he will be fine with 4.11's. In fact with a bolt on car 4.11's would be about perfect for most gain speed wise with his power level.

I don't think you guys are listening. He is a bolt on car only. He is not going to break anything with 4.11's and the stock rear with bolt ons (unless again he uses excessive track runs with slicks). Also, on account of his power level, he should still have room left in 4th by the end of the 1/4 mile. I have 3.73's in my Z in my sig with 614 RWHP and I don't trap over 130 MPH in the 1/4 mile.
Bottom line, he will be fine with 4.11's. In fact with a bolt on car 4.11's would be about perfect for most gain speed wise with his power level.

you also have prolly a 6700 redline he has a 6000 redline with bolt ons...so that takes away a bunch of mph...
ive had gears and dont like them period if you need mor power than make it...gears are more for a track car...not street car

Actually I have a 7100 redline but that has nothing to do with what I am saying. He doesn't have enough power to max out 4th gear at the track with only bolt ons and 4.11's. They aren't just good for the track, they will wake the car up tremendously on the street which is exactly what the guy wants, but he's not even taking opinions on "if gears are a good idea", he just wanted to know which would be better between 3.90's and 4.10's.

4.10's
I Thought I Had Responded To This But I Guess I Didnt I Had 4.10 In My M6 And I Could Cruise In 6th Gear Finally And I Could Still Bury The Speedo, With A M6 It Felt Like Adding Alot More Power!!

it will render first useless on the street....and yes if he decides to spray hell run out of gear for the 1/4...i had a friend that did it and i told him not to and he regreated it...
j z28 is another friend if mine i sold him my cam only motor which hauled azz...and yes it helps that 0-30 but id reccomend against it it will feel great but if you run on the street every1 likes to do a 40 roll and thast the middle of second and 115 is it in 4th...i can grab 40 its the bottom of second and i can pull 4th until 145...also traction is a problem on the street and every1 that gets gears soon need tires...well stock longer gears helps that i can spin them in second from a 50 roll without dumping the clutch with stock gears
3.73 would be alright but once again to get to that weak point where your goana break them if you decide to go to the track.....
i guess its my personal opinion...ive never really had gears and still been fast...they are really for cars that dont have tq or run at the track a lot...not for street cars with 26 inch tires

Besides that, you are wrong. He is not spraying it or doing anything wicked. He said he is leaving it as a bolt on car, "maybe a cam at most". 4.11's will not break if he goes to the track unless he abuses the heck out of it on slicks. As for traction, you can hook up just fine with 4.11's (especially with just bolt ons). I have 614 RWHP in my Z28 in my sig, and I can hook up with cold street tires in 1st gear with 3.73's. A bolt on LT1 will not net more than low 100's in the quarter, and if you do the math, with 4.11's at 5700 RPM (stock LT1 redline) he will be at 106 MPH at the top of 4th gear (perfect for his power level).

Dude, he is not asking for opinions on this! He is just asking if 3.90's would be better than 4.10's.

you have to take the clutch into account too. A stock clutch you can launch at 5k on slicks and it probably wouldnt hurt anything. Most LT1s are on their second (and better) clutch by now considering all LT1s are over 10 years old. I have not a doubt in my mind i could break a 10 bolt on street tires with my spec 3 if i wanted to, and i still have the 3.42.
Fast shifting with a stout clutch can grenade a ten bolt just as easily as tires do. LT1s may not make a lot of rwhp in comparison to LS1s, but they make the same tq numbers which is what breaks rear ends.
that being said, both the 3.90 and the 4.11 are a good gear to go with, as long as you are aware of the increased risk. They are NOT invincible gears on a bolt on car.

Invincible? No, (as I mention abuse with slicks may show the end of the 10 bolt). However I think that shifting fast will do more wear on the tranny than it will on the rear. Besides that, I don't think this guy does a ton of track time, and from the sounds of things I doubt he is doing his track time with slicks and launching at 5k. That is worst case scenario anyways, for all practicality his choice of 4.11's is a great one with his setup.
