Default What timing chain do you guys reccomend ?

I'm trying to buy a timing chain and gears for my 383 project. I'm using the 96 timing cover and CSR water pump with this project. What timing chain set can I use without having to modify anything. Looking at the Cloyes double roller set and the comp cams Hi-tech 3136 ? Any suggestions on a double roller set.

Stock is okay for stock, but if you have a cam with aggressive lobes and high
spring rates, it takes it's toll on a timing set.

I run a pro gear timing set.

A lot of guys including myself using stock sets on modified engines. Lots of guys claim it is bad just as you have but they lack data to back up their claims.

On the other board someone actually started a thread asking about stock chain failures and the overwhelming response was from guys running stockers successfully on modded motors.

Thats your school of thought, and thats fine, but I lost my stock motor to a stock chain that had a rivet let go.

I'm not putting my faith in the stock chain thats nothing more than metal plates riveted together. Not when I've got more than a few bucks in my build. It's just not a risk I'm willing to take.

Here is the exact chain I am using.

ProGear
Part# 732HDSTR

It's a single row chain and required no grinding on my
timing cover.

Thanks for all the feedback on timing chains ! I really appreciate everyone jumping right in. I have been leaning towards the Cloyes double roller with my EWP, but I was hoping for it to be plug & play. It looks like it might take a little grinding to make it work ? I don't think that spending $90 on an aftermarket good quality timing set is out of the question on a modified motor. Especially, when the stock replacement is going to cost 1/3 ($30) of the cloyes or comparable setup. Call me crazy, but I think $90 would be money well spent. I understand the varying opinions and appreciate the responses. Anyone want to name any other choices, tell me more about the pro-gear... Does anyone have any experience with the comp cams hi-tech timing setup ?

Does anyone make a double roller for regular (non-electric) water pumps?

Well there's not much to say about the ProGear.
I think it was about $50, required no grinding on my
95 timing cover. It's just an SBC single roller chain and
it's pretty beefy.

It requires an EWP since it does away with the stock
junk.

It came highly recommended by my builder who uses these
on LT1's

So has anyone recommending other than stock considered he has a 96 and needs to either delete or work with the CPS Probably not since you tend not to think much and just blindly buy things because some false prophet said it was good.

I'm not convinced you're saving money if you HAVE to purchase an electric water pump to run the Pro Gear. EWPs have a few reliability concerns as well, and without expensive monitoring kits, no way to tell if they have failed until temps skyrocket.

Seems to me LT4 is a possible alternative, but I've had no issues with stock myself.

96 caprice mgr,

Brings up a good point for me. I have a 96 with the CPS (crank positioning sensor) and I want to keep the item. What does that change for my choices if I'm keeping CPS on the car ? Do I need something like the LT4 ED timing set or can I still choose from the double roller stuff and do slight modifications to the timing cover. The ultimate setup would obviously be a double roller timing set with no modifications

Is the LT4 Extreme duty a single roller or double roller timing chain ? Do you have to make modifications or can it just be directly installed with a 96 timing cover using the CPS sensor. The chain and timing set will be dealing with boost anywhere from 8psi to 18psi on a 383 forged LTx.
