Unhappy Oil pressure ?

Today while i was driving, i pulled up to a light, and my check gauges light was on, i looked and my oil pressure was on the red, but my temp was normal, and everything else was normal, my car sounded okay, and it was idleing good, then when i took off it jumped to 60 PSI and the light went off, i was shiting bricks, i went home and let it cool off, now its back to normal psi. Has this happened to anyone before?
Thanx, and sorry for the long thread.

Mine gets clsoe to the red... But it also flickers around a lot. I need a new sending unit.

What kind of oil do you use?

If you run 5w-30 it should only run about 18 psi at idle which is really close to the red at warm temp's. It sound like the sending unit got stuck. If everything is working like normal now, and the oil level is normal I wouldn't worry about it.

I'm not real sure for an aftermarket one, but I know an AcDelco will probably run 60-80 bucks. I work for a chevrolet dealership so we don't deal much with aftermarket parts. If you need me to I can find out tomorrow at work and post you back so you don't go running around town looking for one. How close to College Station do you live?

Its called the oil pressure sending unit and it is located behind the intake manifold on the back of the block and it cost about $20.

I just replaced the sending unit on mine. I was reading kinda low too, do these cars idle at 25psi or so? And also, my gauge needle does not move smoothly. It almost jumps like a clock does.

It was doing it again today, in park its right at the first quarter then if i put it in drive or reverse it go's to the red, and the light comes on. Where do they sell for 20$, and is it the one with the long wire that goes to the oil pan on the drivers side, right above the drain plug. I currently run 10w-30 regular oil, not synthetic, would going with a different weight help it out?

Thanx

There about $20 anywhere . It is located in the block directly behind the intake manifold. The one in the pan is the oil level sending unit.

Anytime I have had an issue with oil pressure I always test the gauge in the car against a mechanical gauge before I do anything else.

Excellent idea! I used to permanently mount one under the hood of all vehicles for comparison.

I installed a Yank SS3600 in mine when I had the tranny redone. Works well. With that and some new MT drag radials I am hoping to shave my 60' from 2.0 to ....well lower lol! Hopefully break into the 11's.
