Default 52mm TB

in the april super chevy they have a section on an lt1 caprice and they installed a edelbrock twin 52mm tb. the before and after dyno showed 8.1hp and 23.1 ft lb at peak power. worthy investment? or are these nontypical results?

usually on a stock car or even bolt-on car, a TB has shown to do little to nothing. it would DEFINITELY benefit if your car has head/cam work though.

Magazines manufacture results to keep advertizers happy. If you read closely they may make passing mention of other things that would have impacted the results like say replaceing an OLD DIRTY airfilter, cleaning the MAF or something.

I am not saying a TB is a bad thing just that a magazine is not the place to trust for a test. On a stock car I would expect noting, on a car with intake and exhaust I would ecpect a slight gain BUT a bigger change in throttle response which most drivers will mistake for power.

Honestly though if you want a 52mm get a stocker rebored, if you want to buy an aftermarket get a 58mm and be prepared to open the intake holes.

in the mag they were doing mod then dyno. they removed the maf screen - dyno, CAI - dyno, underdrive pulley - dyno, TB - dyno, headers - dyno. so i dont think anything else affected the results of the mod other than the mod itsself. i've done the maf screen and headers and i have ram air so a cai wouldnt be beneficial. not too sure about an underdrive pulley i have a light dimming stereo system and dont think my electrical system could handle the alt. turning any slower. i am considering the TB tho any suggestions on what brand? i like edelbrock but there are others. the edelbrock has a built in TPS others require use of the existing one.

Still magazines cater to advertizers. All it takes is a little more cooldown which would be logical since the TB sees hot coolant, hell for that matter they may have done the TB bypass at the same time rather than reconnecting it too the new TB and that is worth a proven 6hp even keeping the stock TB.

Go to a 52mm TB. The intake manifold opening is already a 52mm match.

I actually learned the stock intake TB opening (unless someone here has measured) is 54mm. And I've seen 54mm TBs on eBay from shops who have ported out stock ones.

I do seem to notice that every time the magazines test one they gain, but every time someone tests one independantly they see less than stellar results. I am suprised that your hotcam car didn't gain over a stock one, snk-huntr. Results will definitely vary some from car to car though. I agree to save that mod until you have more serious mods than bolt-ons.

Did they optimize the AFR before doing any parts changes? To do a true back-to-back test on an EFI car you need to go into the computer at every step.

True, I would take manufacturers numbers, cut that in half, then cut that in half again and you will probably be close, Remember, at times they will control barometric pressures and temps to gain said numbers. One time I install every kind of bolt on, according to supposedly gains I should of gained app 150 HP, I sent this to Hot Rod Magazine about this and they posted it in one of their mags talking about the so called gains, anyway they put this in their Jr Calculator (which Hot Rod uses) for their calculation and said I had gained like 35 HP but only above 5200 RPM, so this was peak HP. A far distance from the supposedly 150 claimed HP...

Like I said in a later post I bet the TB bypass was done at the same time and correct me if you found otherwise but that is a solid 6hp right there.

Often and objective reader can find clues to the games they played. The replacing a nasty airfilter was one they did when they put a Granatelli MAF on a car.

I completely agree with you, The TB bypass is worth more than the TB swap...

Not useful for me, for that'd be a good bit of info to have for those 94-97 people as far as what casting number is what size.

I would not spend money on a larger t-body until you are pushing big power at least the 450hp area because you will not see enough gain to make it worth the cost. imho

There's always looking at it this way: Larger the opening the less turbulence there will be. So even on a lower power car it'll help a fair amount.
