Default 3.42 rear end in auto

Anyone with 3.42s and auto trans what kind of rpms are you get on highway speeds. like 70mph. I dont have a tune yet I went from 2.73s and my speedo is off 18mph dont know if my rpms are. It seems that at 70mph my rpms are at 2500rpms.

From what it said, 2300rpms @ 70mph in 4th gear w/ a 3.42 gear ratio. 275/40/16 wheels/tires. 17 inch tires were at 2200rpms @ 70mph 4th gear

I don't understand how rim size changes RPMs, but outside tire diameter is another story.

I can confirm that those stock-tire size speeds/rpms are pretty damn accurate since I now have 3.42s in an A4.

I haven't had personal experience with 3.42's but my 3.23's were amazing on the highway. My 3.73's are a little too much for me on the highway but I would imagine 3.42's to be fairly nice.

I really like my 3.42s. They have WAY more pickup than the 2.73s did, and they still get good mileage, and stay low in the RPMs.

That is a good jump from 2.73. Perfect if you have to drive a lot of freeway as well.

I hate my 4.10s on the highway

I'm gonna downgrade to 3.42s. I think those are the best auto gears.

3.42s are fine, but 3.73s aren't that bad on the highway if you can keep it at 65 mph. Don't forget the factory tach reads a little high.

I got my 3.42 rearend for $100. Upgrading to the 3.73s for like $300 more is NOT worth the .05 ET reduction and worse gas mileage. Only way I'd change from 3.42s is to go to 4.10s but that would be a strip car only. And there's no way I'd not allow myself to drive this car OFTEN.
