Default Oil Pump Drive Problems

Has anyone else ever had a problem with the oil pump drive hold down cracking? I have been through two of them already and dont want to go through another one. So I was wondering if anyone knows wher I can get an aftermarket one? or if there is a solution to this problem?

its actually not that piece. Its the piece above that. The one that bolts down in the valley. The piece that bolts down. It keeps cracking, its plastic. Every time it cracks it strips the gear that rides on the cam gear.

Some are making a fabbed up metal plate that rides on top of it and bolts down with the drive. It looks like this.

Same thing from Melling is like $7 through Summit.

I am unaware of anything but a self fabbed holddown like was pictured above.
I have never had a problem myself but some friends have and they were thankful I had spares.

7 months after my rebuilt engine, (lt1 with lots of mods) i striped out my dis geer. 500 miles befor that happened i changed my oil and i put lucas stabilizer in my motor not knowing that is bad **** to put in. i got it fixed with a new dist geer, 4 months later it happend again another striped dist geer. 500 miles befor that happend i put lucas stabilizer in motor with 5-30 moble 1. i then knew it was the oil stabilizer that was stripping out my dist geer. so i fixed it again and i just used moble 1 and no lucas **** it has been all most a year and i have had no probloms. the crap was too thick

i have never used anything but 10w30. My problem is that the hold down on the pump drive keeps on cracking and that is what I believe is causing my gear to strip.

thats what I thought on the first one but then I put another one in and just put red thread lock on it and tightened it just barely snug and it cracked again. I have also talked to a few guys who have used a torque wrench and torqued it to 13 ft lbs and it still cracked.

I just called Comp cams and they suggested cam end play.
What kind of cam are you running?

yeah it sounds like maybe the cam is moving forward and backwards and putting load on it. my last lt1 stripped its gear and that is the only thing i could find that might had caused it.

I am really not sure. Some say it is from side load. Some say from up and down load. I just made me a plate like the one pictured above that I posted. I used 1/4 inch flatbar, and traced the pump drive out on it. I then took a grinder and smoothed the corners and then drilled it.

I consider the plate as extra insurance for a weak part that needed to be made out of metal to begin with. The fabricated plate should serve as a backbone for the plastic.

Here is a good read on the problem.
