Default friend got a 86stang and some1 told him about the hidden gear in the trans lol

sorry i no this is for gm only but i had to mention cause it was crazy. he calls me up and says " a did u not that my mustang has a hidden gear lol" i laughed at him. he said im going to come over and show ya. so he pulls up and i say " ok let see this hidden gear " he said his friend brother works on transmissions and theres a hidden gear. so i look and see 1st gear, drive and overdrive. so i say ok what are u telling me. so i get in and he said theres a hidden second gear lolololololol all i see is drive and overdrive. i was like ok so your telling me i see wrong. so i got in the car and i drove. i maxed 1st gear out to 45mph thats the max for 1st. he said now u see that 1st gear goes to 45 make a complete stop and pop it in 1st then when u hit 35 in 1st gear pop it into drive then back into 1st ..... so i did and the car felt like it shifted into second gear while i still had it in 1st gear doing 70mph. ****** ford makes some retarded ****....... has any1 ever herd of this before

Sounds to me like when you shift it into drive, the computer takes over and it goes into second like the transmission normally does, then when you go back into first it uses the safety feature that all transmissions have. With my a4 i accidentally left it in first once (after a burn out lol) and it still shifted into second, but after that it just hit the rev limiter. From the way you described it, sounds just like every other electronically shifted trans out there.

That's exactly what I was thinking, but didn't know if a 86 Ford computer was that smart. I know my 93 won't shift from first unless I shift it.

You also have a 4L60, not a 4L60E. If that ford transmission is electronically controlled than i don't see why it wouldn't have the safety feature.

Then again i'm going to school for GM, i don't know **** about fords lol. There are three mustang owners in my class and it took me forever to find out what a plenum was hehe

The Ford AOD is not electronicaly controled. They do make a AODe now but the ones from those years were not E transmissions.

Yeah the AOD's went PRNOverdriveD1. There wasn't a second gear selection so the only way to hold out 2nd was to do the above otherwise the tranny would shift into 3rd at like 5k. My buddies blown mustang was like this and his car would pull well past 5k but would shift into 3rd at this rpm in D and kill the performance of the car. He finally went c4. I read somewhere that shifting the trans like this would do some kind of internal damage if done all the time. Not sure though. Change the valve body and you will get the 2nd gear selection.

That's exactly what I figured, it wasn't an AODe being the year it was.
