Default 355 is slowww

ok heres some history/info:
i had the motor in my 95 t/a that was totalled...sold the eng/trans to a friend of mine who swapped it into another 95.

it is a 350 lt1 bored .030,(355ci). stock crank, and i forget the brand of the pistons. heads are ported, polished and milled.
it has a cc503 cam (224/230), comp 918 springs,
bbk 58mm tb, 42lb injectors(i told him not to get that big.),
edelbrock intake manifold.
pacesetter LT's, no cats, hooker muffler.
spec stg 3 clutch, balanced aluminum flywheel, stock 3.42's
has new msd opti, cap + rotor, msd coil, new plugs + wires(week ago)
Everything on the motor is pretty much brand new. the motor itself had 5k on it when i sold it to him, and he just got it running/tuned, so it probably has 6k miles on it at the MOST.
New fuel pump + filter

It was dynotuned, but because of a problem with it hesitating @ around 4200+rpm's they couldn't finish the tuning. The car runs great up until 4200 rpms, even at WOT. we are trying to figure out what the hesitation problem is. When he explained it to me i was thinking ignition problem, but the whole ignition system is new except for the ignition control module(and my understanding of those is that either they work, or the car doesnt run..correct me if i'm wrong). Now im thinking it could be a fuel problem, but everything in that department is new too!!

anyone have any ideas? sorry for writing a book but i wanted to make sure all the needed info was there. Thanks,
James

also, while @ WOT when it was hesitating i noticed what looked like black smoke in the rearview...is it possible that even though the ecm is tuned for the 42lb injectors, they are still too big and are just dumping fuel?

I'm running 42lb Lucas injectors with similar mods and mine passes NJ emissions. Do you have a data logger? You might want to invest in one if you don't have it. I'd be curious to see what the MAF is doing?

i told him to go with 30's in the beginning...and then all of a sudden he tells me he put 42's on it...i informed him at the same time that another friend of ours has an lt1 with an sts rearmount that has 42lb'ers. unfortunetly we don't have a datalogger right now...the car has a brand new granatelli MAF on it...forgot to mention that

I've heard a lot of problems with those granetelli maf sensors. Most everyone says keep it stock.

yep 30's will certainly work. I was at about 19ms (over 90%) duty cycle on my 30 SVOs. I have an NOS dry kit I'm planning to put on, so I upgraded to 42's. Interestingly, the car idles better and runs smoother with the 42 Lucas than it did with the 30lb SVOs.

Do you have a stock MAF to try? If you can get a datalogger I would check the MAF, trim values and detonation hits.

thanks for the quick replies, we do have another stock maf to try, but i doubt we would be able to get a datalogger as of right now...he spent a lot of money building the car and is almost tapped out as far as cash goes

Puffs of black smoke is also a sign of detonation.

i dont see 12 lb difference in injector size being the issue.

do you have an ignition box(msd 6a, etc)? I had the same issue at 5200 rpms years ago when I first built my motor and put a box on it and the problem went away.
