Am i the only one that doesnt like 4.10s with an m6. I think its a little too much. First and second gear are useless without slicks and it seems like im shiftin all the time. I would really like to go with the 3.73s but it prolly kinda depends on the kinda torque you have and where its at.

I agree, i like my 3.42s with a 25" tire & stock cam, the car has a ton of torque, but not so much it blows the tires off bad, the only real solution to going with a steeper gear are some stickier tires to take advantage of the gears, otherwize your just blowing the tires off, but with stickies & 6sp. can spell disaster, especially without the heavier guts/axles, but then your still takeing a chance, i know some claim know issues with there 6sp. 4.11 10 bolts, but most break them, if you guys are shelling out 6-800 for a 10 bolt set-up, thats just freakin NUTS lol, spent the extra few huandred & buy a moser 9" housing/axle package for a 1000.00, then put together a 3rd. member, or just buy a complete 3rd. member allready done, there are tons of them out there for very good prices, i'm out only 1400.00 for my complete 9", anyone wants this 10 bolt, they can have it

those are shims. you have to install them on both the pinion gear and the carrier (differential). this is to achieve the correct backlash.

the way i do it, and only on my own cars, never a customers car, i measure the bearings (old and new). if theyre the same (to the .001") then i use the same size shims that came out. most of the time this works but dont hold me to it.

Depending on how mechanical you are and your tool layout its not rocket science. I've done 4 sets over the years with out help, but if your not comfortable look in the little nickle, talk to race car shops or your car buddies someones bound to know someone. Try randys ringandpinion.com they might have some useful info. And let me know how you like the 4:10's

4.10's, i run motives, a lot of guys around here are running richmonds and they make a bit of noise.

if i were you id run 4.10's, im actually stepping down to 3.73's here soon i just cant keep the tires on it leaving the hole, and will shift into 4th in the 1/4, it could be saved going to a taller tire, but i just want more streetability. Stuff you dont have to worry aboud with your 6spd.

I would go with whatever gear allows you to be as close to power peak as possible when crossing the traps.

That can happen especially if you're running past your power peak.

Ok well my buddy is wanting to go back stock on his z28 cause he drives a lot of highway, and I only drive mine on the weekends, but her is wanting stock and he wants to trade me, just swap out the whole rear end for rewar end, he has a 95 firebird rear end with 4:10 and he wants to go back to stock, so u think I should do it?

that would be the cheapest, easiest gear swap youll ever do. just make sure that his rear end doesnt feel like it has a lot of slack in it first. drive his car and listen for whine, or anything that feels loose when you start to take off, or slow down.

He said its In perfect shape its just he has to run the highway a lot and wants to go back to 3.42's, so I think I may, some people were telling me to check to make sure that he doesn't have traction control, cause I don't but why would that matter?

I would rather spend money on a rear end worth the investment... which I just don't see the ten bolt being... Yeah it costs more but its like modding a toaster just because u don't have a Microwave yet....

I would get a 3.73 gear from GM. I heard from several different people that they are not noisey at all. I have the Richmond brand it is a thicker gear so it whines a little. But keep in mind once you change your gear it will knock your speedo way off. Thats when a computer tune come in handy.
