Default I figured I would start an Oil Type war! LOL

So I have been used to cars with more miles and not actually rebuilt motors etc and now its time I sit down and rethink how I do things concerning oil and which one to use.

I have been reading this:
http://www.howstuffworks.com/framed....nfo/oiled.html

I also live in Tucson, AZ... a Desert so its hot constantly and by hot I mean 100+ is pretty normal getting below 89 During the summer is a GREAT and RARE thing. Being that as it is I always ran 10w30 Val Max Life Synth. Blend in my Imports... yes I have owned a few... I am back we can get into that later.

However what I want to hear about is what others use and why. I have been hearing from some of the big build guys they like Rotella Shell Synth. I used to run normal Rotella Shell in my old Camaro's so to hear it again got me thinking about it.
I have been a fan of Val for years *shrugs* Been the common use of the family, and when they go from building street rods and drag cars to F1 cars for a living... you just stop questioning them... plus when you ask its not a friendly discussion... I get told why not to question someone with such knowledge.

So why not ask an opinionated board that will probably never agree and see what fun ensues along with good info.

What do you like? As I said the Big Builders I have been talking to have been putting The Rotella Shell Synth above Royal Purple... which I was never into paying for anyway lol.

We can also bring Synth vs Synth Blend (My personal pref) vs Non-Synth.

So what can everyone add? What do you like and why? What brand and what tests have you done? What about weight? What do you run in our wonderful hot weather and what vehicles do you run it in?

Also heres an addition, For those who know Danica Patrick, she is promoting Peak Motor Oil... I decided to give it a run, what about everyone else?

I use cheap Supertech synthetic 10W30 from Wal Mart. When I did my cam swap the inside of my motor was clean and everything looked to be in good shape. I have to mention I have over 180,xxx miles on this motor. Summer around here gets into the high 90's and winter get's below 0 at times. Gotta love PA. I've spent a ton of money on name brand oil in other cars and every time I take a motor apart they are filled with sludge.

Probably count on one hand the number of guys who frequent this section who have actually done enough research to make intelligent statements on this subject. The overwhelming majority are completely ignorant about it.

is where to go for real information on this subject.

Castrol GTX 5w-30 (colder months), Castrol GTX 10w-30(warmer months). I was going to do some experimenting with some Royal Purple 10w-30 next oil change (probably sometime next month). But, I've heard that once you use synthetic, not to go back to non-synthetic. So, I'm a little hesitant to make the leap to it. I may try out some German Castrol, since I hear a lot of people praise it on here.

Sofar these guys are proving my statement about the ignorance most will display on this subject. Not uncommon for a 10w-30 to be THINNER than a 5w-30. M1 has been heavily tested in the LT1 and LS1 and the results are NOT what you guys assume they are.

Medium Garnet Red, was years before anyone told me they thought it meant manager but apparently lots of guys think so. Thought about changing it but then I hate on some boards how guys change names and you never know who is posting what.

I do not have any real strong oil loyalties, tried a LOT, recently cleaned an Autozone out of German Castrol(Castrol Syntec 0W-30 specifically labled "made in Germany") when I found it, by measured datas in this engine it seems to be the best and has been for some time. It can be challenging to locate though.

0w30 German Castrol. Do it. I used 5w30 Mobil 1 until I switched over and looking at the data sheets, it's slightly thicker in cold starts and at operating temp than the Mobil 1. This is mostly because to be a true full synthetic in Germany, it must be made from Group IV basestocks. It's now the only thing I'll use in my LS1.

T&D machine said do not use any motor oil with the new starburst emblem. The newer oils are designed for lower emissions and they have removed some important anti wear additives.

shell rotella t in all my flat tappet motor. 15/40. also same in my 212k mile jeep.
roller motors, t/a gets 10/30 (autozone this time) and chevelle has 10/40.

i also live in PA, and those are the weights i run all year.

here is a very good read one guy wrote up on a forum i am on. he does a lot of research on oils to find the best ones with the most zinc in them for the older flat tappet motors...
