Question im stumped, can anyone help?

I have a 95 TA w/LT1... Yesterday it started fine but today i go to start it and absolutely no noise when in the start position, nothing... I pulled the started and went and had it checked,,, passed perfectly.. Then i figured maybe the battery, so i took my optima out of another vehicle and nothin still... when i cross the posts on the started it only sparks a little bit so im thinkin maybe a ground wire? Any help would be appreciated... Thanks......

When you turn the key 12 volts should be applied to the small wire on the starter. I is actually the solenoid. Try jumpering 12 volts there the starter should engauge and crank the engine.

If it doesn't post again I suspect it will crank but lets wait and see. Do NOT turn the key on that way it wil crank but not start.

Be CAREFUL not to short the wire to any metal don't make this a bigger problem

when i cross solenoid to starter it turns starter but not the flywheel.. the started isnt throwing the gear out to connect.. Then i took it and got it tested and they said it was fine. sorry, maybe im not understanding what you're sayin, but let me know if this is what you're talking about... The first time i tried crossing them it turned the hell out of it, i tried again just to double check and now it is just a little whine?? Thanks...

It worked out of the car...so if you connect 12 volts to the solenoid in car it will tell that the power to the starter is ok if it cranks.

and point the problem to the ignition switch and vats...another way is to remove the wire and have someone hit the ignition key. The solenoid wire should go to 12 volts when key os turned to start position..

your choice

with the key turned the solenoid to ground on the starter is reading 12.17 V and at the battery it is 12.57... So it's not my ignition i dont think.. the only thing left is the ground which will get changed tomorrow... Do i need to change both to the engine and to the starter? anything else it might be.. thanks....

I don't understand what you wrote...I think you are saying between the wire to the solenoid and the ground on the battery the voltage is 12 when key is turned.

That seems to say that either the large 12 volt cable to the starter is bad or the ground from battery to block is bad.

IF you checked the voltage from ignition wire to ground then the 12 volt from battery is probably bad. You check it by using meter from the large cable to starter and the other side to ground.

Good luck you are close

it'll cost a whole 15-20 bucks and a little time to replace the grounds and the power cables... Needs it anyway... ill keep ya up to date.. I checked the little purple wire to make sure i was getting voltage when the ignition was on to rule out ignition problems... im gunna replace grounds first then if need be positive cables also... thanks for the help again.....

Wise approach. Often we neglect such items then have trouble some cold rainy nite.

Hope it works out for you today
