Default Bolt-on E85#'s

EDIT: Bolt-ons + heads

Finally dynoed my car today with CAI, ported heads, STOCK cam, 1.7RR, Hooker LT's, running E85. 322.7 rwhp, 338.7 rwtq. I was expecting at least 330 rwhp, 340 rwtq, but still ok I guess. My last dyno was with gas and only mail order tune, CAI, and cutout at 281/312.

^^ true... and also we cant really tell how much of an increase it was since you did the heads etc at the same time...those are good numbers though. how does it drive? ive always kind of wanted to do a ported+polished head + 1.7+stock cam car...would be a helluva sleeper. and 1/4 mile times?

Throw a cam in that sucker, and make use of the ported heads. You'll be more impressed with your performance and #'s.

Swet the idle a little high and the LPE 211/219 cam can pass for stock. Maybe a ZZ4 cam they are dirt cheap but require a little machining.

One of the b-body guys tried ported aluminum heads with a stock b-body cam and lost 2hp which is meaningless but the point is a stock cam does not use more head that well. I think the 1.7s are helping.

Actually since you have the rockers already and presumably want to keep using them maybe specifically look for a fairly low lift cam like the ZZ4 or HOT, or look at the lobe catalogues. Depending on the springs capability, if you pick a cam with say under .520 with 1.5s you will stay under .590 with the 1.7s.

I'd have to imagine you're at least using 30lb injectors? I know from other e85 guys the stock 24lbers can't even handle the 260hp the LT1 b-car makes (DC 150% At WOT)

Yeah I meant to put bolt-on + heads, but I originally posted from my phone didn't mean to leave that out, so that's been edited. I was also running the dyno pulls in Open Loop tune, since I have my wideband currently in the pass side header. I wasn't sure if I would gain much with the heads given the small size of the stock cam, but that is why I went with 1.7 rockers, to make better use of them. I do have 30# SVO's but need I think I need bigger with the E85, as it hits about 108% DC near redline. On the dyno, their wideband showed a leaner mix than did my LM1, but I assume that was due to an exhaust leak where my y-pipe meets the catback pipe. It runs very smooth, torque curve is practically a straight line from 2500-5000 RPM. By the way, I've also got 162k on the motor, which is why I haven't done a cam yet. I'll probably just run the setup like it is until a new motor is needed. Then I'll do a 388.

The A/F was off on their dyno because I have a small leak where the y-pipe meets the catback pipe. My new LM1 was in my pass side collector, thus the reason I ran Open Loop. I read 11.6-11.8 A/F until the top when I read 12.0-12.2 (108% DC on the 30# SVO's).

Decent, but honestly I would expected a bit more due to the E85, 6 speed, and aftermarket heads. These guys are probably right that the stock cam doesn't help out those aftermarket heads much.

+1 on the track numbers

I was a little disappointed as well. My AFR was where I wanted it, I started with 2* more timing over my bolton tune from MadZ28.com and adding even more timing didn't have much effect, so I'm not sure where I could pick up the extra power. Unless the stock intake manifold was holding the heads back slightly?

Id get rid of those injectors for sure..That MIGHT help your #'s a little bit. Nothing else, it'll make the injectors last longer, since they aren't maxed out..I think the rule of thumb is anything over 85% DC, is bad.

I agree. Those injectors are definitely maxed. E85 typically likes around .78-.80 lambda for best power which is 11.5-11.8 A/F (on gauge set to display gas A/F) vs 12.7-13.0 for gas. I was reading 12.2 up top, so richening up .5 to get 11.7 A/F might just make that extra 8hp I want for 330 as well as some more torque.

I thought you needed an 8.x:1 AFR or thereabouts when running E85 11.x:1 sounds too lean. I would def get some bigger injectors though.

Well O2 sensors actually read lambda, then convert the lambda value to an AFR number for the gauge, 1.0 lambda is stoich no matter what fuel you run. Since 14.7 is stoich for gas, and the gauge still reads AFR values as gas, it shows .8 lambda as 11.78. If i changed the readout on the LM1 to E85 (stoich as 9.765) then the same value at .8 lambda would read 7.81.

I just got the 30# SVO's with only 8k on them 2 months ago, because i thought they would be enough. I wish now that I could just trade them for some 36's or larger. LOL.

Oops, made a mistake on my A/F ratio! I was looking again online at some A/F for best power E85, and turns out I misread it. I though I was shooting for lambda of .80-.82 when I should have been shooting for E85 A/F ratio of 8.0-8.2. Basically meaning that my gas A/F reading should have been 12.1-12.2 anyway. So I need to go back and lean out my PE vs RPM tables instead of richen, which is what I did on the dyno runs. That should give me a little more room on the injectors, although they will probably still go static, just probably at a higher RPM, about 100 RPM.

I haven't dynoed since last week with the 322hp/338tq. It will probably be a while before I do it again. I'm definitely waiting until everything is where I want it first with fueling, and maybe try a larger throttle body.
