Do you mean a totally stock motor or just stock short block. Either way, I wouldn't worry about it till you do a rebuild. You will need to have the block bare to have it done and if your taking it apart down to the block you might as well do a rebuild. You have to have it done at a machine shop. Prices vary. I did splayed 4 bolt caps and I paid $300.00 for machining and $200.00 the caps.

if its a 97 you might be a lucky one that got a leftover vette block.

my LT1 is a factory 4bolt

When my stock block developed a piston slap at 30,000 miles my extended warranty was still good so GM replaced the motor. I heard they replaced it with a 4 bolt block.

That's a very reasonable price. The last conversion I had done cost about $750 by the time I got it back. Believe me, 800 or even 600 horsepower is pushing your luck. If you disassemble a few of these puppies that have seen 75 or a hundred passes at 7000 RPM, you'll see evidence of cap walk with 2-bolt mains. From that point to disaster is only a short step.

that is a good deal. machine work only on mine was 750. thats drill/tap and align bore/hone. forget how much the 3 caps were but they were pro-gram splayed caps.

while we're on the subject, Im going to hijack a bit.
Assuming ive got a 4 bolt small block with forged rotating assembly laying around, would it be pheasable to take all the lt1 gear, and place it on the 4 bolt block without a crap load of extra work?

The LT1 and gen 1 blocks, while they share basic architecture are not interchangeable.

Far as 4-bolt mains, by the time you actually need them you are better off with aftermarket caps than OEM and there is still a fair amount of machining to change the caps, so don't pretend factory 4-bolt is anything wonderful.
