PCMforless as Bryan is an awesome tuner. You will see wayyyy more gains and customization than the handheld programer. Do a seach and you will find ton's of stuff abou them all.

It would help a whole lot if you told us what you have, even just assuming it is an LT1 f-body there are three different systems it could be using depending on what exact year it is.

so pretty much the only way to tune is to exchange your pcm or to send it in and tell them what you have so they can tune it. is there a program for a computer that lets you do it at home. a full on tune program. not a hypertech. or is sending in mine pretty much the only option.

There absolutely are ways of doing it at home, but we can't give you more info till you tell us what you have?

96 is a little more expensive to tune than a 94-5 but you can still do it at home, or if you don't have to worry about emissions testing you can swap to a 94-5 computer, cheaper software and a few of the professional tuners say a little more power.

Tunercat is my pick on software.

A 96 is OBDII, so you could use TunerCat or LT1Edit. I would select TunerCat, as it is more flexible. It is currently marketed by Jet, and can be found in several places. You also need scanner software, and a wideband O2, such as an LM1, and a laptop computer.

You don't necessarily need to send the computer in to get it done, although its the easiest choice. I had my tune emailed to me and then uploaded it with my laptop. All I had to buy was an ALDL obd1 cable since my car is a '94 and it cut down on travel time. If I had to do it over again I would have shipped it. The damn cable was over $50 i think.

The programmer has a cable and a hand held to program your car ,it lets you set your shift points, thermastat from 180 to 160,reset your speedo if you change gears or tire size, set your rev limiter, and tune it for a bit more power 15-20 more hp and i got 22mpg and my TA is black on black hard top.

I just used it on a 96 IMpala, that was mis tuned by mail order.. Worked great and has more than enough parameter's to do whatever you need... Easy to use interface, nice GUI.. etc...

Btw be nice to those that give you info... They're all just trying to help...

This is the TunerCat programmer, which I mentioned previously. It is the best you can get for your car, and yes, it is quite flexible.
