you'll be fine.
i had my exhaust come loose on my '99 and burn a hole in the plastic gas tank. i didnt blow up LOL, altho it possibly could have happened.
yours is steel anyway.
just a few screws holding it in place.

Get a new one and replace it, unless you like the smell of gas. Mine was missing when I bought the car. The gas would boil and killed the evap system - and pressureize the tank - NOT GOOD.
