I talked to Bret Bauer the other day and he said that its simply how loud those particular rockers are and swapping to LT4 valve covers or some billet ones would quiet it down. He reasoning is that the stock LT1 covers were designed for use with stamped steel rockers where as say the LT4's were designed for use with roller rockers and they are known to keep the noise inside. Makes sense to me so that looks like the next resort.
I have stock valve covers with 1.6 promag rollers and you have to put your head up to the valvecover to hear them! Sounds like a sewing machine. What kind of rockers do you have?

nah I haven't, didnt think anything would be wrong with the bottom end since its so new and I've been beating on the car and its fine. I'll give that a quick check tho.

It sorta sounds like rod knock but not quite as loud. I kinda doubt it tho because before I installed the heads/cam everything was dead quiet so it doesn't make sense that I do heads and cam and fire it up and all of a sudden my bottom end is messed up. I drove the car about 60 miles today and it runs absolutely great, my TPS voltage is off and needs to be adjusted which makes the idle a little funny but the car drives like a champ.

If the bottom end is messed up the car will be parted out and sold because Im fed up with it so I hope that isn't the case.

You definitely got something beating around in there man. Did you check piston to valve clearance when you put it together?

It sounds like my dads old dirt track car when someone dropped a screw into the carberator and it was bouncing around from one cylinder to another. I wouldnt run that thing too much until you find out whats wrong...

That I did not. If it helps any, the sound is consistent no matter what side of the engine your standing on and it doesn't sound like anything is jumping around just a constant ticking. I drove the car a good 90 miles today and it drove great.

Stealth that tick sounds borderline knock in the video, how does it sound in person?

I cant imagine how it sounds when you drive it, Id be checking oil for metal and shavings. Does it really sound that bad in person (Im not sure if its the video making it worse or what)?

I just changed the oil yesterday and it was clean as anything, I was expecting something. It sounds pretty bad in person. I've heard rod knocks and whatnot and its not as loud as that tho.

did you check out everything that runs in front, water pump, timing chain, ps, ac, opti etc . for a possible lose bolt or something rubbing.

It does sound valvetrain related but you never know

Good news....I took it to two local engine builders and they both assured me it is definetly not the bottom end. Both of them said its a valvetrain issue and they both said something is wrong with the lash adjustment. The one guy told me my 1/8" turn preload is most definetly the noise and that I should put about 1/2" turn preload and no noise would be present.

Scott: Yeah everything there is tight and good.

That's got to be good news for you! I know that I danced around a bit before I got mine set just right. It was frustrating, but eventually resolved. Obviously, I wasn't there in person, so I couldn't hear your car for myself, but I was thinking that it couldn't be bottom end, as it happened immediately after you did the head/cam swap, and initially fired it up...Didn't even get a chance to beat on it.

I have that exact same ticking and have for years. Never been able to get rid of it. I'm like you, car runs fine, but the ticking is very loud and I've had quite a few guys comment on it.

I left for school 3 weeks ago so I haven't done anything with the car. I bought some aluminum valve covers that will tone down the ticking a good amount and if its still too loud Im going to put more than an 1/8" turn preload probaly a 1/2" and see what happens. Won't be till xmas time tho.
