Default Need valve cover recommendation

I need a recommendation for slightly taller than stock valve covers. The stockers on my 396 get tapped by the rocker arms.

The alternator is not an issue as I have a Madman manual rack and relocated the alt down low. However, I would really like to continue using my Metco breather, so would like to find a pair that have the opening on the passenger side that is the right size for it.

What are others folks using (and liking)?

TIA,
Todd

i was able to just grind the "fins" down flat where the polylock was hitting. mine were just barely touching. ive also heard of people doubling on gaskets. not sure how leakproof that is though.

Are the rockers hitting the top of the valve covers or on the brackets? I clear with my Pro-Mags perfectly but I had to grind down the brackets a little bit. I grinded down the circles at the top there and the part of the bracket that wraps around just below that. Im not even sure I had to cut that one part of the bracket off. But if height is the issue than I know the Canton's as well as the LT4's are taller.

I run Proform's, they're 1/4" taller than stock. part# 141-131 black.
They are also available polished or chromed. #141-132
Nice pieces, GM logo and all.

Thanks guys. I am going to check out the LT4's and the Proforms. Mine already have the exact mods pictured, they are just simply too short.

The Canton's look good, but they will have clearance issues if you buy the F-body specific ones. If you have relocated your alternator their centerbolt fabbed ones should work and look killer. These:

Are you saying that PN 65-206 won't be taller than stock, or that there is a different reason for clearance issues? They call it a "F-body style tall fabbed aluminum valve cover". If the 65-206 is even just a bit taller, like 1/4", than OEM, then I'd go with them. Just need a wee bit more space inside. I would like to have them come with the holes for the breather tube and fill cap already there, as opposed to the more generic ones. I can get the holes machined, but would rather go plug and play if possible. I've been so freaking busy with various projects that avoiding a trip to the shop would be a bonus. I guess I'll be calling Canton tomorrow to find out unless you can tell me.

The F-body style (65-206) ones are notched to clear the alternator and that is where the clearance issue comes from. Oh and they can make them with the holes for the breather and a fill cap, just tell them what you want over the phone.

Thanks everyone, Duffman in particular. I ordered the "generic" ones, the 65-204's to avoid the alternator cut out, and will machine the breather and filler holes.

You'll be happy with the Canton's. Just use cork gaskets and you'll be good.

So do those require or not require relocating the Alt?
My buddy has a 95 Z28 and is having rocker clearance issues. He just needs them to be a little bit taller, and does not want to relocate/modify anything.

The 65-204 will require moving the alternator.

Wow, that was fast. So I tried searching a couple of different forums, but no real clear answers yet...

Are there any valve covers that offer a little more clearance AND require no modification whatsoever? Thanks for the help.

I have some, but I will have to dig out where they came from. Not at home right now. They don't have that serious look that the Canton's do, but they can be engraved with any design you want.
