Default Cracked Trans: Let'r rip or get'r fixed?

I got a trans from a member on here and when I was switching out the speedo gears, I noticed it was cracked. Was wondering what you all think about it, if it'd hold up fine to my car (sig + DRs) or if it will need to be fixed. It won't see any track time, but it'll still get beat on as it should.

If its going to cause a problem it might not right away. So if what your asking is "can I install it and run it for a bit" you can......but it will undoubtably cause a problem at some point (crack will get larger from stress, it will leak ect..).

Had a friend with an LT1 that had a cracked bellhousing, and it stood up to a few 12.3X runs on nitrous with MTs. Eventually of course it gave up the ghost, but it was a fighter.

You may just want to fix it for the sake of not having to go back and do the work again

Well I guess I'm asking more of if it's a heavily stressed point or not, and probably more of a "If I leave it, how long would people think it'd last".

If the guy I bought it from comes to some sort of deal (great guy, so I'm sure we can), then I probably will. If not, then I'm at a bit of a loss for the moment :\

Can you give me a better pic of the actual location of the crack, rather than a close up?

I have an idea where its at, but hard to tell being that close.

I don't have the pics on this computer, but that's the tail shaft. If you pull off the read housing, that's all you see and the crack is to the right side of the tail shaft. It's after the bearing.

EDIT: At the shop now, here's a rear pic. Yellow is part of the crack, but not all of it by any means. Travels under the bearing (under the tail shaft) and then up past the bearing in that key-way past the bearing as well.

Be careful man, not in a great spot. At this point id be asking if that trans is built or not. If alot has been invested in it, Id get the crack fixed as you dont want that to create bigger problems when the trans finally does decide to give out (after a nice blast) and take out a few other things that origionally wouldent have been damaged.

IF its a stock trans, and you dont care.......THEN you can beat it to death

Gotta keep you away from that ****

We all know ***** during work = counter productive.

Even properly covered ***** of larger than normal size can cause problems.

It's supposed to be built with 6000 miles on it since then, but since I haven't installed it yet, I can't say for sure. I don't doubt it is though. And no offense to the guy I bought it from, but I'm not thinking it happened during shipping. Simply due to it's location, being on the inside of the trans instead of the outside. I'd think the bell housing would crack long before anything else.

Well, it was a fully working pull, and while it is an internet transaction he has a trader rating of 5 with 100% positive.

If it's a piece that is broken off, and the bearing presses it against the case, it wouldn't be able to go anywhere. So, IF that's the situation, would there be any integrity issue? And (clearly) I'm no trans guy, but why wouldn't it have reverse?

Dont kill it if its built, that would be a complete waste of money. Get a new case or have this one repaired and be ready to go. From the pictures you gave that appears to be a pretty good crack, and TwoFast4Lv has the pic from inside so you can now see where it goes.

Yeah the case needs replaced. No real way to save or weld the case when it is broke like that. I am guessing the tail housing was broke off.

Its the output/tail shaft, merv. Thats what the trans looks like with the tail shaft housing removed. Same housing the torque arm bolts to, if it still isn't clear heh

The guy I bought it from said if I shipped it back he's swap cases, so I told him since he'd have to buy new seals anyways, why not just send the seals here and then my friend can do it. Would save a ton on shipping (which if I can't get free shipping twice more [there and back here], would be more than having the local shop do a case swap) and time. My old trans I swapped out should have a good conditioned case (no reason it shouldn't). Just hurts that I pay $550 for a trans and 2500 stall and am stuck in this situation Not mad at the seller mind you.
