Depends on what it is...

Things that tick louder than normal :

- Mis adjusted rockers
- slightly spun bearings
- collapsed lifters
- bent pushrods (sometimes, usually more of a knock)
- exhaust leaks

Just a short list off of the top of my head, some worse than others..

it started after it overheated one day when i was driving it home, after letting it cool down. it was runnig fine and then the car just started to shake and run like total dog ****. i've been thinking collapsed lifter, but don't know how to tell with them pulled out. plus i can't do it started cause i broke three pushrods after getting the wrongs specs to tighten them down to.

Well, if you overheated it badly and it now runs like crap, I am going to say headgasket right off the bat. But before we jump to any conclusions, how badly did you overheat it exactly? Did it peg the gauge before you noticed?

The ticking could be related to the overheating, OR something adjusted improperly since you worked on that recently too...

yeah it pegged it. I noticed it at about 235-240, but i was in the far in lane in heavy traffic and couldn't get over. by that time it was pegged. as far as working on it goes, this was back in february. I work so much that it hasn't been til recently i got to dig into it.

Also, the ticking didn't start until after it overheated and then the shaking happened. i noticed it the next day

Ouch, lots of bad things happen after motors overheat... Warped heads/head gasket would be among the worst.

Notice any unexplained coolant loss recently?

That would more than likely be your overheating reason in the first place then, blown head gaskets cause coolant to just burn away (often unnoticed).
