you dont need all that for a spun bearing. I would get the new oil pump, new bearings, and get the crank checked and a new one if needed. other than that, the only other things i would get just because the motor is old and would benifit from it since the motor is already gonna be torn down and rebuilt are new rings, ARP rod Bolts just to be safe, anda new timing chain and possibly the gears depending on how worn they are. And yes, for that cost, i would buy a 383 stroker kit for half the price and learn to build a motor myself

Can't they drop the oil pan and look at crank shaft/ bearing to see if it is bad or not ?

very hard to get the oil pan off the motor while the motor is in the f-body. Have to remove motor mounts, jack up the motor, take off OPSU, possibly the intake, and possibly the tranny....The k-member is just too close to the motor and the oil pan cant clearance the crankshaft when you are trying to get it off. its a real pain in the *** to get the oil pan off with the motor in the car, but ive heard of it being done.

Mir brought in his car for a gear set install, he spoke with Wade at the track last weekend as he said there was a noise in the engine,
When the car was brought in, we did cut open the filter and find bearing material,He asked us how much to do the engine in his car....We gave him a quote on complete rebuild with upgraded parts, not a bone stock rebuild!
The prices you see are exactly what he was quoted, We do not do "patch jobs" here at ARE.... would we just pull the crank and put in new main bearings and crank? NO... what about all the bearing material that has gone through the rest of the engine? would we build a new short block and put on the old set of heads with out pulling them a part to check the guides, springs, valve job and replace the seals etc.... NO....
Mir was quoted on what recomend doing to do the job right!! so there`s no further issues....Also keep in mind the car has 70,000 miles on it.....

I'm with Barry on this one. Why half *** a bottom end? I know guys who have done it, only to have to rebuild it again a month later 'the right way' when a bearing spins again.

I lost the cam timing gear on my 94Z back in March, and it put junk through the bottom end of the motor. Bottom end looked ok, but popping off a main cap, and just feeling the grit that was against the bearing, was enough for me. It's getting a full rebuild. But I'm going to get a budget stroker crank instead of cleaning up my stocker.

There is NO SENSE to put a stock crank back in there if you are looking at new pistons. 383 cranks are CHEAP. No need for the $2k cranks. You can get a 383 kit for about the same price as you've got there for the rod work, rings, pistons, and crank. Do a little shopping around and have ARE quote you on a cast SCAT 383 crank, etc. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised.

First off, no flame was intended. Second, its a given to tear down and inspect the whole motor if you have spun a bearing, if you dont, your a fool. Thirdly, he didnt say how many miles were on the motor so who is to say it needed a new timing chain and gears. Fourth, forged pistons arent neccesary when a stock replacement piston will do just fine. Fifth, Cleaning the heads is neccesary to inspect them, but again, he didnt specify how many miles were on the car so who is to say the springs, valve seals, or valve guides needed to be changed. He commented on a basic rebuild, not an upgrade so I gave my opinion on what was needed for a basic rebuild of the bottom end. If the crank is not scratched or unbalanced in any way, then there is no reason to change it. There is no reason to upgrage to forged pistons for a stock rebuild as well in my opinion. Im well aware of ARE reputation and I wouldnt hesitate to buy parts from yall or seek yalls advice when I need it. My posts were in no way flaming ARE. I was just offering a cheaper solution for a stock rebuild.
PS Congrats on the 8.5x run, yalls car was screamin'!!!

On reading most of the posts I think most of the guys don't realize 2900 canadian dollars is about 2000 us dollors. A complete performance rebuild by a reputable company like ARE for 2000.00 is good value IMO.

Balancer ................................... $250

What was wrong with your stock balancer? You sure you need a new one?

Heads (Cleaning) .........................$350

What does that entail? The minimum you should get done would be resurfacing and a valve job (as well as new springs, etc.).

Crank Shaft Core (Stock) ..............$350

Ouch. As was pointed out pick up a case scat or eagle crank for 250-300 US$. If you want a stock crank for a core pay for shipping and I will send you a few .

Rods Bolts ..................................$100
Resize Rods ..................................$80

You might as well go with some eagle I beams - not really that much more and a better value IMHO.

Disassamble and Assambe ............ $750

Assuming that includes machine work and balancing?

Everything else looks fine and reasonable. For the price it cost almost nothing more to do a 383 so why not do that though?

Chris your still quoting Canadian dollars as if there US dollars. I built a 383 and from experience I know you cannot do it with 3000 Canadian. The scat crank your talking about costs 600 Canadian up here.
