Default building a forged bottom end

I was at the track lastnight getting some baseline numbers for my car b4 I start modding it, and ran into my buddy from the old car days. He just happens to have a complete 96 LT1 with a spun bearing sitting in his shop. He will sell it to me for a couple hundred bucks. So Im gonna buy it.

Now whats involved in the build and how much is it gonna set me back to do a complete forged 355 bottom end with it.

Then Ill throw on my LE2 H/C LE3 intake and all the supporting mods. And spray the hell out of it next year! It will be nice knowing Ill have a complete stock motor sitting in the garage incase I blow the other one up.

Scat offers some nice 4340 forged rotating assemblies with Mahle coated pistons reasonably priced. Go splayed four bolt mains if you can afford it.

You can find a block much cheaper than a couple of hundred bucks im sure.. My friend just sold a bare LT1 block with 60k miles on it for $100.. and has a few more blocks.

A block with spun main bearings may be junk. Mine had 2 spun mains and was not fixable.

i'm having my shortblock built by a local machine shop right now. and so far it looks like it will be in the 4000.00 dollar range. i know your all going say wow thats too much! but hell its like 2500.00 just in parts. eagle forged crank, 6" eagle hbeams w/arp2000 bolts, je pistons w/tool steel pins, hellfire rings, program splayed mains and bearings.

then you have machine work, clean and magnaflux, convert to splayed, bore and torque plate hone, deck and align bore/hone, check lifter bores, balance rotating assy, install cam bearings and freeze plugs, file fit rings, assemble and check tolarences, degree camand check ptv cleance...

adds up quick!

It is altogether possible for the spun main bearings to compromise the value of a block. Check for indications that high heat has turned the metal around the main a bluish color. Further, bearing failure can result in scoring and abrasion of the cast iron. Such damage can be addressed by building up material in the main saddle with a welder and then remachining the bearing bores. This is not a cheap operation. Be cautious before spending a lot of money on a block that has spun a main.
